DECEMBER 15, 2007
Ua Ao Hawai‘iWords by Larry Kimura Chant melody by Kalena Silva
Kau e ka wena o ke ao i ka lani
The announcement of dawn appears as a glowing streak upon the heavens,
He wekeweke i ka pö pilipuka
It is a narrow opening in the darkness heralding the day,
He ‘elele o ka poniponi hikina
It is a messenger of purple glimmer from the east.
Kau ke kähe‘a wana‘ao i ka ‘äla‘apapa
Streaks of red stain long cloud formations,
La‘i ana i luna o ke kükulu o ka lani lä
Reposing serenely upon the pillars holding up the heavens;
‘O ka‘u ia e huli alo nei i ka ulu ë
I turn to gaze upon this, focusing on growth and the rising of a new day,
‘Ae, ua ao ë.
Yes, day has arrived.
Hö mai lä kö mälamalama
Bestow upon us your radiant light
I ka honua nei i ka mauli ola
Here upon the earth, filled with the spirit of life.
Ua ao Hawai‘i ke ‘ölino nei
Hawai‘i is in the brightness of day, it shines, brilliant
Mai ka pi‘ina a ka welona a ka lä
From its boundaries from the east to the west.
Kähiko ‘ia i ka ‘ike manomano
It wears as its finery a myriad of knowledge,
Ka ‘ike köli‘u mai o kikilo mai
Of deep insight from the depths of antiquity.
‘O ka‘u nö ia ‘o ka pülama
My sole duty is to embrace and to cherish,
A pa‘a ma ka ipu o ka ‘ike ë.
So it may be firm in the repositories of enlightenment.
‘Ae, ua ao ë.
Yes, day has arrived.
He mele no Hawai‘i ua ao.
This is a poem for Hawai‘i which has seen the light of day.

The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Student Association cordially requests the pleasure of your company at
a reception at the Campus Center Plaza immediately following this commencement ceremony.
Music to be provided by the Richard Lee Ensemble.
Keynote AddressDustin Shindo, a Waiakea High School graduate, earned an MBA from the Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia and a BA in accounting from the University of Washington. He is one of Hōkū Scientific’s co-founders, and has held his positions since the company was established in 2001. In 2005, he led the company through an initial public offering. Today, Hōkū Scientific is one of only two Hawaiÿi-based companies to be traded on the NASDAQ Global Market. At 34, Dustin is one of the youngest CEOs of a publicly traded company in the country. As a diversified materials science company focused on clean energy technologies, Hōkū Scientific has three businesses: Hōkū Materials; Hōkū Solar; and Hōkū Fuel Cells. Hōkū Solar, an integrated solar panel installation business, offers turnkey installations of photovoltaic (PV) systems for commercial and residential markets. Hōkū Materials is building a polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) manufacturing plant in Pocatello, Idaho, with an initial planned production capacity of up to 2500 metric tons per year, with shipments beginning in the first half of 2009. Hōkū Fuel Cells has developed proprietary fuel cell membranes and membrane electrode assemblies for stationary and automotive proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Prior to Hōkū Scientific, Dustin founded Mehana Brewing Company in 1995. The Hilo-based microbrewery is now the largest bottling brewer in Hawai`i, shipping products to several states and Japan. Four years later, he established Activitymax, Inc., a software company that develops reservation software for the travel industry. As CEO, he managed development of the company’s software applications and spearheaded contracts with several of Hawai`i’s largest travel companies. Dustin also served as a business consultant with The Lucas Group, a strategic consulting firm in Waltham, Massachusetts. Recently, he collaborated with several University of Hawaiÿi professors to hellp found Kai Sensors, which is developing technology to detect heart rate and respiration without wires or contact. This is an exciting example of what can be achieved when businesses and the University work in cooperation.
Student AddressJeffrey Byrne, a communication major, will represent the graduating class as its student speaker. Born in 1985 in Placentia, California, he graduated with high honors from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana in 2003. An outside linebacker and special teams player on the Monarchs football squad, Jeffrey teamed with future University of Hawai`i Quarterback Colt Brennan. His teammates and coaching staff selected him for the Kodak Player of the Year award in his senior year, when the team earned a berth in the state Division I Championship.Jeffrey enrolled at UH Hilo in December 2005 after graduating with honors from California’s Fullerton College where he earned an AA in liberal arts. At UH Hilo, he has maintained a 3.61 GPA and is a member of the Lambda Pi Eta National Honors Society. As a new and enthused proponent of community service, Jeffrey participates in beach cleanups and supports skate park fundraisers. This semester, he partnered with a fellow student to facilitate a study circle at the Ola’a Community Center for children ages 10 -15. A similar project is in the works and anticipated to involve the YWCA’s Teen Court.
A Message From The Student Association President
Aloha UH Hilo graduates,
Congratulations on your commencement! Now what? Are you ready to go out into the world? Are you ready to repay your student loans? Are you ready to move out of your parents' house?
Don't worry, you'll be fine. The world is as ready for you as you are for it. You can always get a deferment on your loans, and your parents won't mind if you live with them forever.
As you venture out into the dawn of the 21st century keep in mind that you are entering a special time in human history. We are as technologically evolved as we have ever been. As a result we are able to experience a reality unlike any person on this planet ever has.
Life has never been so comfortable. Life has also never been as problematic. Natural di-sasters are occurring on a daily basis, the divide between rich and poor is growing wider, and many of our leaders have lost their souls to greed.
As graduates from an American university you are some of the most fortunate people in the world. You also have a large responsibility. Please face your responsibility in these epic times. You are needed now more than ever.
-Justin Avery, President 2007-2008 University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Student Association (UHHSA)

The Star-Spangled Banner
Poem by Francis Scott KeyMusic by John Stafford Smith
Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say, does that Star‐Spangled Banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Hawai‘i Pono‘i Music by Henri Berger Lyrics by David Kaläkaua

Parents, Relatives and Friends,
To find your graduate after the commencement exercises, look for the first letter of his or her last name which is posted on the outside walls of this gym. Congratulations to all of you!
Academic Regalia & ProcessionThe wearing of academic gowns, mortarboards, hoods and tassels originated in Europe during the Middle Ages and since the end of the 19th century, it has been an integral feature of the commencement ceremonies in the United States. Here at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, we also continue the tradition of marching in academic regalia. Indeed, the colorful procession of faculty is marked by distinctive caps and gowns from universities worldwide, the velvet facing of the hoods indicating the specific field of study. Similarly, the color of the tassel worn by today’s graduation candidates reflect their major.

Celebrating Commencementand the
60th Anniversaryof the University of Hawaiÿi at Hilo
BIG ISLAND – BIG IDEAS!1947 - 2007
Congratulations to our Fall 2007 graduates!
Commencement is a joyous occasion, one of my favorites, when students, families, friends and our university community come together as one big ‘ohana to celebrate our graduating class.
This year, we also celebrate an important milestone for our university: UH Hilo’s 60th An-niversary!
Since 1947, UH Hilo has grown from a small branch building, to a liberal arts campus, to a comprehensive university with over 3,600 students. It is a privilege to be chancellor as we celebrate 60 years of remarkable achievements that have contributed so positively to the health and well-being of our communities.
UH Hilo brings vitality in myriad ways to our island, state and Pacific region. We are build-ing a professional workforce, strengthening the economy, addressing the needs of our com-munities, and revitalizing Native Hawaiian culture. Our excellence in innovative academic and cultural programs helps our citizens secure a better quality of life, and brings UH Hilo worldwide recognition.
Our foundational roots go very deep, and we are fortunate to have extraordinary students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, supporters and community partners who have made this jour-ney so remarkable. It is because of an exceptional collaborative spirit—the Aloha Spirit!—that we have made such significant achievements over the past decades. We are grateful for everyone’s continuing support and dedication.
UH Hilo’s 60-year history continues in our students, our alumni, our island communities and extended ‘ohana. It is through everyone’s support that we continue our momentum into the future. I know that history will repeat itself with another 60 years of outstanding per-mance. The future is UH Hilo.
It’s wonderful to have this graduating class celebrating commencement at such an auspicious time for the university. Again, I send heartfelt congratulations to our graduates!
Aloha,
Rose Tseng, Ph.D.
