Greetings!IamhonoredtobewritingthistoyouinmynewroleasPresidentoftheMoenLakeChainAssociation.Overthepast12yearsIhaveservedourlakesbyheadinguptheCleanBoatCleanWaterprogram,andbyholdingvariousboardofdirectorroles.Ihavebeenluckytohaveservedalongwithsomededicatedvolunteersthatareworkingtoprotect,maintainandenhanceourchainanditssurroundings.Inthisnewsletteryouwillreadaboutsomeofthosevolunteersandwhattheyaredoingthroughouttheyear.Mostrecently,IwasfortunatetobeVicePresidentunderourdepartingPresident,KeithKelling.HisleadershipandguidancewasappreciatedandIamgladheisstayingontheBoardasPastPresident.AlsopleasejoinmeinwelcomingnewBoardmembersJulieGustandSteveHart.Inaddition,ourmissionstatementstatesthatoneofthefunctionsoftheBODistoprovideinformationofconcerntoourmembers.Wehaveincludedinformationabouttwoissuesthathavebeengettingmoreattentioninourstaterecently,VRBO’sandwave/wakeboats.Ifyouhaveotherissuesyouwouldliketoseemoreinformationabout,pleasedonothesitatetoreachouttomeoranyofourotherboardmembers.TheBODmetonSeptember29,2021andvotedunanimouslytoincreaseouryearlyduesto$25(unchangedfor26years!).Wefeltthiswasnecessarytoensurethatourchannelmarkersaremaintained,andthatourboatlaunchcontinuestobemonitoredforinvasivespecies.OvertheyearsIhavespokentomanyofyouthathaven’thadthetimetoworkatthelaunchontheweekends,andyou’veaskedforotherwaystohelpout.NEWthisyearwillbetheopportunityforyoutosupportourboatlaunchevenmore!Ournewmembershipformshowshowyoucan‘SponsoraDay’atthelaunch.Yourpaymentwillpayforattendantstoworkatthelaunchthatday,andyourname(s)willbepostedatthelaunchshowingthatyouareanInvasiveSpeciesAttendantsponsor.Untilnexttime,Ihopeyouareenjoyinglifeonourchain!--Nancy

Intoday’shousingmarkets,consumerdemandforowningsecondhomeshasdeclinedinpartbecausebusylifestylesmaketheownershipandmaintenanceofasecondhomelessattractive.Alternatively,consumersprefertorentahomeforseveralweeksduringtheyear,or,iftheydopurchaseahome,theywanttohavetheoptionofrentingthepropertiesonoccasiontogenerateadditionalincometohelppayforthepropertytaxesandmaintenancecosts.

Wisconsin’sRighttoRentlawdoesnotpreventlocalgovernmentsfrombanningnightlyrentalsorrentalsoflessthansevenconsecutivedays.Thelawtreatsrentalsoflessthansevenconsecutivedaysdifferentlybecauselawmakersbelievesuchrentalsaremoreofacommercialuseofproperty,whichmaybeinappropriateinsomeresidentialareas.

TheMLCAFish&HabitatCommitteehasbeenworkingwiththeDNRtoadd‘FishSticks’offtheislandonFifthLake.Thestickswilladdvaluablehabitatforfishspawning(moreinfohere)andotherlakewildlife.DaveHanson,TonySattlerandBartTegentouredtheislandwiththreerepresentativesfromtheDNRinSeptember.Theprocesswasdiscussedandapermitwasappliedfor.FishSticksreplicateanaturaltreefallinthewater.(Notreesfromtheislandwillbeusedforthisproject).Donatedtreeswillbetakentotheislandovertheiceduringthewinterandsecuredasperspecifications.TheFishSticksprogramhasbeensuccessfulinotherarealakes,includingLakeGeorgeandtheThreeLakesChain.

AnewthreattoNorthwoodslakesAsmembersoftheMoenLakeChainAssociationBoardofDirectors,weshareacommoninterestofpreservingthehealthandbeautyofour

lakes.Wecontinuallystrivetokeepapprisedofpotentialthreatstoourlakes,bothnaturalandman-made,sothatwecanenjoyourbeautifulsurroundingsforgenerationstocome.

Weshareamutualrespectforotherlakeassociations,aswellassharinginformationwitheachother.Recentlyanewpotentialthreatwasbroughttoourattentionandwe’dliketoshareitwithyou.

Asyouareaware,ourlakesareveryshallowbyaveragestandards.Withthefairlyrecentadventofwake-enhancingwatercraft(aka:WEW,wakeboats,surfboats)appearingonourlocallakes,adverseeffectscouldhappenasseenonotherlocallakes.Specifically,fishhabitatsarebeingdisruptedquickly,waterqualitydeteriorates,aquaticplantsdecrease,shorelineserodeandinvasivespeciesincrease.Andtheboatownersandoperatorsarefindingthatusingshallowlakesfortheirwakesportsisnotonlyverydifficult(theultimate,preferredwakesarecreatedindeepwater)butthey’redamagingtheirboats.Howmanyofuscanattesttothequantityandsizeofthebouldersunderthesurfaceofwater?Toomanybrokenpropstocount,right?

Thereisnodoubtthattheseboatsandactivitiesmakeforaveryfundayonthewater.However,theshallownessoftheChaindoesnotlenditselfwelltotheuseofwakeboats.
