FALL OF NAPOLEON&

CONGRESS OF VIENNA

FALL OF NAPOLEON

•Following the Russian invasion the French army was left in a very weakened state.

•Other nations’ leaders throughout Europe saw this as an opportunity to attack Napoleon’s government and remove him from power.

•A coalition of European countries led by Great Britain and Russia were able to defeat Napoleon and remove him from power.

•Napoleon was captured and sent into exile to the island of Elba.

•Napoleon was able to escape and return to Europe in an effort to reclaim power- Hundred Days

•The effort failed. Napoleon was defeated in the Battle of Waterloo and sent into permanent exile where he died of natural causes.

CONGRESS OF VIENNA (1815)

• Following Napoleon’s defeat, leaders from Europe met to clean up Napoleon’s mess.

• At the meeting leaders discussed:

• 1. How to fix Europe?

• 2. How to ensure that another Napoleon could be prevented.
