Boy Scout Troop 90 (Affiliated with Concordia ELC)
Churches have had a long relationship with Boy Scouts and Girl
Scouts. Recognizing our scouts and their leaders on February 8th gives
everyone present a boost. Scouts’ participation in a worship service is evi-
dence that many youth are on the right track.
Please welcome our Scouts on February 8th!
In November, Troop 90 took a break from their 2-night cold weather camp-
out to assist the Cub Scouts Pack 159 with their Food Drive. During the
drive, 2300 pounds of nonperishable food items were collected and do-
nated to the Columbia Food Bank.
(Our scouts meet every Tuesday night at 7PM in the Fellowship Hall.)

Pastor Mary Anne’s Message …
Stories of Winter
In his book The Children’s Blizzard David Laskin describes the sudden
blizzard of January 1888 in Nebraska and South Dakota. Temperatures plunged 22 ° in under
five minutes and whiteout conditions occurred so suddenly that you couldn’t see your hand
before your face. It is often called the Children’s Blizzard because so many children died,
sent home early from school only to never make it home. The sudden blizzard conditions
caused eyelashes to web together, freezing one’s eyelids shut, virtually blinding you. It was a
devastating storm which killed 235 people, mostly children, and it lives on in the memories
and stories of the descendents of these pioneers.
My Grosspapa (grandfather) would also tell stories of winter, winter in the countryside of
Canada, north of the Great Plains. Born around the same time of the Children’s Blizzard, he
would tell me he would watch as his older brothers would dig a tall tunnel in the snow from
the house to the barn every winter. These tunnels had to be dug just at the right time; if you
waited too long you would not be able to dig them; too soon and they could collapse on you.
He had neighbors and friends die from the tunnels or the lack of a tunnel. As the youngest of
12 children, the tunnels always seemed so looming and tall to him, but they ensured the safety
of the family as they milked and fed the animals even in the middle of a blizzard. His story is
part of my family story.
We, in PA, don’t have these particular stories of winter, but we do have stories of especially
cold winters, or great Nor’easters that dumped several feet of snow. But we all have stories of
winter in our families and in our Church Family, stories of sadness, tragedy, or awe encom-
passing moments when we seem very small and the walls around us are so high and we are
blinded by the blizzards of life. We face illness or death or change.
That is part of winter, and winter is a part of life. But we are not alone, wandering by our-
selves in the swirls of snow. Our Lord Jesus Christ breaks into our world and our lives, lead-
ing and guiding us through the blizzards and heavy snows. For the first half of this month we
continue in the season of Epiphany, where we listen to the stories of God breaking into our
world through Baptism, healings, callings and his Word.
Then we move into Lent, that wonderful contemplative season which prepares us for spring
and Easter. Because even in the harshness of winter new life waits with God’s grace and
love.
What is your winter story, your family story? How has God led you and your family through
the blizzards of your life? How can the hope of Easter free you from the darkness and cold of
winter? In Christ, Pastor Mary Anne
