President’s Message By Mary Lu Booker
Dance by yourself and you can jump as much as you want. Greek Proverb
There are two sides to this old Greek proverb. Most
obviously, it tells us that it is important to spend some time
doing things by yourself, for yourself. When you are alone,
you can do exactly as you please. But there is another,
unspoken message in this saying, which is that when you
are not alone you have to take the wishes of the whole group
into consideration. Compromise is part of getting along with
other people.
In the past 15 months we have all spent much of our time
alone, separate but together. With the approval of the
vaccine for COVID, we are now able to gather again with
some new guidelines. I am cautious but excited to get
together again without wearing a mask or being afraid to hug
my friends. With the uncertainty of our lives for so long, our
plans for moving forward have been made cautiously. We
have scheduled our meetings and workshops to be held
virtually for 2021. Knowing that virtual workshops and
lectures can be done effectively, we will not rule out that as
an option moving forward. We can schedule teachers who
would have cost too much to have them here in person. I
asked our second VP, Linda Nitzen, to schedule those valued
artists even if it is virtually. Of course we will also be
meeting in person with in-person workshops. I am looking
forward to seeing Linda's schedule for 2022 and beyond.

President’s Message
The August retreat is on for this year and is already
sold out with a wait list. Depending on the changes
announced on June 15 by the state, there may be
more options. Kristen Holden will keep us up to
date on all things Retreat.
Have a great and safe summer!
Special Notices and Reminders Lost and Found
This quilt was left behind at the home of Gina Whitelaw during a
Friendship Group formation meeting a couple of years ago. If it
is yours, or if you know who it belongs to, please contact
Gina Whitelaw.
New Facebook Group for FGQG
By Gina Whitelaw
We now have a private Facebook Group for our members only. When in Facebook,
go to the Groups section and search for FGQG (Flying Geese Quilters Guild) of Or-
ange County Members Only. There is another Flying Geese Quilt Guild on Facebook
so please make sure you ask to join the correct one. You must be a current paid
member of Flying Geese in order to join this Facebook group. Be sure to answer the
membership questions. This is a great way for us to keep in touch especially while
we are not meeting in person.
We now have rules for our Facebook Group. Here they are:
• Be Kind and Courteous
• Give credit where credit is due. When you post a photo of a quilt you need to post the pattern name and the designer’s name or company. We need to support
our quilt designers! Quilts designers rely on pattern sales for their income. • No politics or religion in this group
• Respect Everyone's Privacy

Sunshine and Shadows
Longtime guild member, Angela Lodin, passed away
on June 1, 2021.
Angela was a Guild member for more than 25 years
and was active in the Wee Bees Friendship group.
Services were held on June 14th, and there is a
tribute wall for Angela on the website of Brown
Colonial Mortuary if you would like to share a
remembrance or condolence.
In keeping with our by-laws, the Guild will make a
donation in Angela’s name to a quilting related
organization. We will truly miss Angela’s loving
personality, beautiful smile, and generous spirit.
The following was written by Angela’s Daughter-in-Law:
“Angela Amorous Lodin, my beautiful mother-in-law, went
home to be with our loving Lord early this morning. She
was a woman of strong faith with a wonderful sense of
humor, endless kindness, curiosity, integrity and a heart
full of love for all people. She raised five exceptional sons
and loved her three grandkids so much. I was honored to
have called her my "other mom" for the past 32 years, and
I will truly miss creating more memories with her. Rest
well, my sweet MIL Angela, until we meet again.”

Zoom Tips and Hints
By Ellen Reibling
WE WANT TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE!
We need to know who you are in our monthly meetings. You can do this by turning
on your video or typing your FULL name in the screen. Zoom committee (Ellen
Reibling, Trudy Cleveland, Eileen Wintemute, Carol Moore, Linda Smith) can actually
type a name in for you! Just ask. The Guild reserves the right to remove anyone from
the meeting if we cannot tell who you are.
Follow these easy directions to change your screen name in Zoom.
* Access the participant list
* Next to your name, click on the > arrow or More >
* Click to rename
* Type your preferred name
Remember when we have prizes, only attendees showing their full name on the
screen are eligible!

Our guild is offering a new activity for our members to get together via zoom. We’re calling our get together a “Sew-in” —- it’s a time where you sign on to zoom and sit and
sew or chat with other members. You can stay for the entire time or just part of
it. Just set up your device, log on, and sit and sew or chat.
You can sew by hand or by machine. If you think your machine is too loud, just use the mute function which allows you to listen to everything taking place and continue
sewing.
You could spend the time cutting fabric, marking, binding, etc. or you may just want to see a familiar face. The quilt police are blocked so no one will be checking to see what
you’ve accomplished. Our sew-ins have continued into 2021. We’re enjoying sewing and chatting together. It
has been a fun way to get to know other members, see other projects, ask questions about techniques, and hear about new tools. Of course, sometimes that leads to more
shopping.
Please come join us - you can stay for the entire time or drop in for whatever time your
schedule allows.
If you have questions, please call/email Mary Howland.

Our next quilt show will be held in the Fall of 2023. This is to bring us back in line
with having our show in odd-numbered years. We are continuing to work with SOKA to
establish a mutually agreeable date and will let everyone know as soon as that
happens. We appreciate your patience as we work through this process.

Please send images and descriptions of your quilts and projects to
newsletter@flying-geese.org by the end of the month. They will be gathered and
arranged in a slideshow to be shared at our Zoom guild meeting. It'll be fun to see
all the creative projects you've been working on, especially during this stay-at-

We receive quilts of many sizes, and our motto is " Any donation received will find a
home." There are several size categories that we try to fill - here are the general quilt
sizes needed. These are NOT exact measurements, but just guidelines for your
projects:
Adults – 40”x50” up to 50”x60” (for VITAS Hospice, St. Joseph Cancer Center)
Babies – 30”x40” and above.. remember babies will grow into them (for our Military
Showers)
Young Children ages 2-17 - any size from 40”x50” and up (for CAST – Child Abuse
Services Team)
Teens, young adults – 60”x80” for twin bed, also double and queen sizes welcome
(for StandUp for Kids serving formerly-homeless young adults)
These are guidelines. Please contact us if you have questions and THANK YOU for
supporting Flying Geese Philanthropy!
Sew Days are at the Orange Quilt Bee, generally the third Wednesday of the month.
Our July Sew Day will be July 21, 10AM to 2PM. At the time of this writing, all Guild-
sponsored activities require participants to wear masks to protect our community.
Please come for all or part of the day – there are always plenty of projects to do, good
snacks for nourishment, and of course lots of chatting with friends. As always we
thank the Orange Quilt Bee who allow us to use their facility.
We are beginning to collect Holiday Placemats for donation to Meals on Wheels. We do
this each year and provide several hundred home-bound seniors with some holiday
cheer. We will have kits available to pick up at Sew Days, and we have the directions on
our website if you have fabric at home: https://www.flying-geese.org/newsletters/

We receive many thank you notes for our donations, and in May we received several
notes of appreciation. VITAS, the provider of hospice care that we support, wrote the
following: “Ladies of the Flying Geese Guild – I want to thank you all so much on behalf
of VITAS and our patients for the many beautiful quilts you made for them! They are
precious forever gifts and wonderful keepsakes. Thank you Julia (Renaud) for making
all the deliveries to our office…. We do adore being the elves to deliver all your lovely
gifts!”
Philanthropy By Stephanie Schneider

We occasionally can support fire victims with the gift of quilts. Here is one thank you:
“Hello Flying Geese Quilters, I received one of your beautiful quilts! I lost my home in
the Santa Cruz fire this year. It was so nice to have people I don’t even know make
such a loving gift. One of the things that I treasured that I lost was the quilts that were
passed down in the family. So now I have one again. Thank you – Marcella.”
Heart-warming messages, surely. Thank you again for supporting your Philanthropy
committee in this work!
