Fibre rope: potential to replace wire

rope in most of operations

Significant advantages over wire rope

Minor disadvantages over wire rope (so far...)

infinite possibilities: wind farm installation, shipyards, slings for equipment installation, seafastening

Federal prosecutors discovered a

bribery scheme and corruption

Public administration, contractors and Directors involved

Stock price melted

1st Barrier

Wire rope culture

Successful past experiences

Behavior well know by designers

and operators (feel safe to use)

Easy to buy (local or import)

Consolidated standards and guides

Good over-sheave fatigue resistance

Heat and cut tolerant

2nd Barrier

Misconceptions about fiber ropes (believe or not)

UV radiation: can be a problem for some fibre and small diameters. HMPE

fibers are unaffected.

Not as strong as steel wire: high-performance fibers (HMPE) are size-for-size as strong as wire rope, at less than 15% of the weight.

Susceptible to cutting and abrasion damage: can withstand considerable abrasion and unacceptable level of

damage can be identified in inspection.

3rd Barrier

Technology

Standards and guides consolidation: Definition of factors of safety.

Deployment of full load & recovery of empty hook

Low stiffness of rope: load elongation & increased natural period

More sensible than steel wire: heat, abrasion and cut damages

Requires adequate handling and handling system.

Low coefficient of friction

Transverse cut resistance

Not to damage the load, wear your sling, or else, use fibre rope!!!
