Introduction
What is the FYP Civil Engineering Project
Part I (CIVL4101) Civil Engineering Project
Part 2 (CIVL4102)
No contact hours
Why is it important? 25% of your final year Could reflect the field
you will be working in
Getting Started
Project allocation form deadline 4:30 pm Friday 16th March (Week 3)
Set up meetings with your supervisor Maintain contact so that they know who
you are Contact them over email Find out when they have lectures Are they going to be away during the
year? Set out times each week where you will
focus on FYP
Getting Started
Things to discuss Objectives, milestones, methodology
and resource needs Expected timeline
Get reading materials Supervisor Use the library Past projects
GET STARTED NOW!

Award of Honours
Class WAM Project mark
Honours 1 ≥76% ≥70%
Honours 2A ≥71% ≥65%
Honours 2B ≥66% ≥60%
Pass
Topic: Numerical study of foundation uplift in mitigating earthquake loadings
Supervisor: Winthrop Professor Hong Hao Numerical software: DRAIN-3DX
Continuation from topic in 2010 using DRAIN-2DX
Numerical Project
Numerical Project
You can do it at any time/ anywhere
Stay clean More control More independent
Working the software Getting results Late nights Might need a better
computer Tedious
Benefits Challenges
EXPERIMENTAL PROJECTSBryan Poon
Experimental Project
Topic: Experimental and Numerical Modelling of Strip and Rectangular Foundations on a Sand Embankment over Mine Tailings
Supervisor: Winthrop Professor Andy Fourie Experimental Device: UWA Drum Centrifuge
Experimental Project
Experimental Project
Experimental Thesis
Experimental project
Easy to showcase logical thinking
Always get results Familiarity with lab
equipment More content
Lab prep work Longer hours in labs Physical intensity You can’t cram labs
Benefits Challenges
What I Wish I Knew – Lab Inductions
What I Wish I Knew - The Beginning
Stuck? Find some papers Read Papers that are similar to your
experimentation Plan your experiments far in advance
and start them early Is the experimental innovative?
What I Wish I Knew - The Experiment
Things may go wrong, talk to your supervisor
Don’t break the equipment What results are you
expecting Always refer to your plans Keep up to date with your
results – keep a journal
What I Wish I Knew – The Writing
Graphs – Show Logical Flow, vary the number of factors
Compare your results with other papers
CEED Projects
What is it? What is different?

Early Progress Report
What you have done, what you plan to do.
Brief but concise. Guidelines provided in
‘Final Year Handbook’. Only 5% weighting.
Symposium
Paper and presentation. Two-day conference-style symposium, attended by
students, staff & industry.
Symposium - Paper
Hand your paper in on time! Results and conclusions and
INTERESTING content. Formatting as specified by the School. Past papers – Civil Office?
Symposium - Presentation
15 min presentation, 5 min questions. INTERESTING - pictures, videos, props. Practice makes perfect! Industry opportunities.
Thesis - Writing
Possible structure given in ‘Final Year Handbook’.
Use ‘Thesis Writing in Microsoft Word’.
Harvard-style reference. End note. ~ 80 pages. Thesis Draft.
Thesis - Submission
Finish writing early! Proof-read to minimize
errors. Beware of Uniprint.
