Oceanografische data als (inter)nationaal erfgoed?

Definitie erfgoed (bron Cultureel Woordenboek):Betreft de zorg voor wat ons als samenleving rest uit het verleden. [ … ] omvat ook archeologisch erfgoed en 'immaterieel' erfgoed, zoals gebruiken, kennis etc. Het is het geheel van verhalen, plekken, gebouwen en objecten die binnen een groep van generatie op generatie wordt overgedragen.

Vanaf 1861 dagelijkse waarnemingen van temperatuur en (later) zoutgehaltein het Marsdiep.Uniek in de wereld!

Problem:

20-25 years ago, potentially enormous amount of valuable, oceanographic data in Europe

- Very scattered- Many sources

· Government agencies, research institutes, universities, NGOs· Online and offline

- Many different formats (and systems)- Variable data quality (depending on purposes for which the data were collected)

• No overview

• No (easy) access

• Estimated 50-80% of time ‘wasted’ on finding and converting data

Solution: SeaDataNetan operational pan-European infrastructure for managing marine and ocean data

SeaDataNet connects National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODCs) and oceanographic data focal points from 35 countries bordering European seas

SeaDataNet is: - a consortium - an infrastructure- a legal entity- a series of European oceanographic data

management projects, starting in the 1990s
