Byfourtosixmonthsofageitistimetostartintroducingsolidstoyourinfant.Fromthenonyourgoalshouldbetoofferawidevarietyoffoodstheywillenjoy,whileprovidingthenutrientstheyneedtogrowandthrive.However,manyparentsareoftenunsureofhowtobalancetherightkindsofproteins,carbohydrates,healthyfats,andvitaminsandmineralsvitalforpropergrowthanddevelopment.Plus,findingthetimetopreparehealthymealscanseemoverwhelming,especiallyfornewparents.

LikeIsaid,mykidsaren’tperfect.Theyhavetheirlikesanddislikes,andevenwithallthatIhavelearned,therearedayswhenmyhusbandandIbreakalltherules.Nomatterwhat,wealwaysmaketheextraeffortnottofightwiththemoverfood.Tomakethe

familytableapositiveexperienceevenonthedayswhenthekidsaredrivingusupthewall.BetweenmytwodaughtersIhavealmostsevenyearsofexperiencefeedingin“thetrenches.”Iusedthesamefeedingstrategieswithboth,andtheycouldnotbemoredifferent.Onelovesanyandallfruitsandvegetablesandwouldliterallyeatthemalldaylong.Meat,ontheotherhand,isnotherfavoritenomatterhowitisprepared.Myotherdaughterisallaboutmeat.Fromlambchopstofish—shealwayswantsmore.Sheismuchmoreselectivewhenitcomestoveggies,withasmallnumberofacceptableoptionsonherlist.Theybothlovedeggs,thendecidedtheyhatedthem,thenlovedthemagain—arollercoasterofdrama,that’swhatlittlegirlsaremadeofinandoutofthekitchen.Thereisonecharacteristicthattheydoshare:theyare(almost)alwayswillingtotrynewthings.Theychangeeveryminute,andIembracetheexcitementthatcomesalongwiththeirnaturallydynamicnature.

uringthefirstthreeyears,therateofgrowthismorerapidthananyothertimeinlife.Tosupportallthisgrowth,kidsneedlotsofnutrient-richcalories.Thedemandforvitaminsandmineralsisincrediblyhigh,andsomeoftheseareeasiertocomebyinthetypicaldietthanothers.

Dietarysupplementsmaybeanoptionforsomechildren,butingeneral,foodshouldalwayscomefirst.Workwithyourpediatricianandaregistereddietitiantodetermineyourchild’sspecificneeds.Eitherway,makesuretherearemoreofthesefivenutrientsintheirdiet.

•CALCIUM•Function

Calciumisresponsibleforthepropergrowthanddevelopmentofteethandbonesaswellasmusclecontractionandnerveconductivity.

Childrenagesnewborntothreerequirebetween200and700milligramsofcalciumperday.
