Area Relief Ministry’s Room in the Inn Program by Sharon Matthews
First United Methodist Church has begun its ninth year of participation in The Room in the Inn program by helping to house and feed homeless men in our community. Over 40 churches in Jackson/Madison County participate in this mission with each church agreeing to provide a hot dinner meal, a warm and safe place to spend the night, and a hearty breakfast the next morning. Each church makes a commitment to host and FUMC’s commitment is to host two nights each month. Many of our church’s Sunday School classes have agreed to participate by hosting one or more nights, giving of their time and providing what is needed. I would like to thank the following Sunday School classes for volunteering to be in charge of the program on those nights: Religion for Life, Family Life Forum, Genesis, Women in Christ, The Well, and Friends in Faith.
In addition, a heartfelt thanks goes out to a special group of members who volunteered their time during the Christmas weekend to provide and serve a delicious holiday dinner for the seven homeless men who came to our church. Those who graciously helped were Jennifer and Allan Trently, Bob Redding, Peggy Pate, Judy Lafont, Betty Betterman, Paula and Mike Butler, Lynn Menendez, Anne Barker, Susan Crocker, Jennie Longmire, Val Exum, and Rebecca Ward who brought her mother, Bernice Perry and daughter, Anna. In addition to the bountiful dinner and a warm gym in which to spend the night, we gave our guests gift cards for a Subway meal, warm socks, and Christmas cookies. The best gift of all was to sit with our guests in a spirit of Christian fellowship, sharing dinner with them, treating them with dignity and respect, showing our care and concern by talking with them and listening to their stories. After serving the meal and
kitchen clean up, Mike and Allan slept in the gym with our guests and made sure they had hot coffee and nutritious breakfast bags to take with them the next morning.
What a privilige it is to minister to the less fortunate, answering the call our Lord has given us to feed, clothe, and house the poor, treating them with respect and dignity just as we would if it had been Jesus at our door asking for help. Jesus told the story of the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25:31-40 to help us understand how we should treat others.
I invite any of our members who are not currently involved in a mission but would like to help with this ministry to contact me, 668-8120 or sharonmatthews43@yahoo.com. Perhaps you are not in a Sunday School class or your class does not participate in Room in the Inn. The poor are always with us and there is much to do. We need your help.

Pastor’s Bible Studyon Psalms
January 20-April 20Wednesdays 10-11:00 a.m. Room 118/Religion for LifeAn invitation from Associate Pastor, Jeff Rudy
Come and explore a book that especially searches and plunges the depths of the souls of individual as well as the community of faith. Where else could be more appropriate than the Psalter? As a 20th century mystic writer, Thomas Merton, wrote in his brief book Praying the Psalms:“ The words and thoughts of the Psalms spring not only from the unsearchable depths of God, but also from the inmost heart of the Church, and there are no songs which better express her soul, her desires, her longing, her sorrows and her joys.” I think this will be a wonderful time of learning and experiencing the rich treasure known as the Psalms, the ancient book of prayer and praise that has given utterance to the experiences of God’s people that cannot be adequately expressed in narrative or exhortation. Come, let us pray and worship and learn together!
To guide our study, I am going to follow the basic outline of a study written by Eugene Peterson, who is the translator of The Message version of the Bible. The study is called: Psalms: Prayers of the Heart – 12 Studies for Individuals or Groups. begin Wednesday, January 20 and take us through April 20. We will convene in the Religion for Life classroom, as usual. Cookies, water, and coffee will be there waiting for you!
