Pastor’s Letter March 9/10 Dear Parish Family When I was in my next to last year of seminary, our spiritual director extended to us the opportunity to make a thirty day silent retreat. The plan was to spend four weeks living in a retreat house on the seminary grounds, praying for an hour four times a day, taking part in some physical work each afternoon, participating in morning and evening prayer, celebrating Mass together, and meeting for a little while each day with a spiritual director. Most of all, we would not be allowed to speak to anyone, except for that little bit of time with our spiritual director. So no phone calls, letters, email, or text. The last two did not even exist then. No speaking with each other at meals. About twenty of us ate silently with a bit of classical music in the background. Why did I sign up? I remember thinking that it would help me to be closer to God and that it would help me to decide more about my journey toward priesthood. I also thought that the monastic life, which our retreat was like, was kind of mysterious and romantic. I had read some books on prayer and solitude and I found them uplifting and attractive. I have some many good memories of that retreat. It was truly time alone but also time at one with God. So yes I met God. I also met the devil. I bet that got your attention! I do not mean that I met a fierce figure with fire in his eyes. But I think I met the tempter who is described in the gospel today. Let me explain more about this. Quite a bit starts to happen when you are quiet for thirty days. At first the silence is peaceful and refreshing. But it does not take long before it becomes testing and irritating. With nothing to think about but what is in your own head, each person begins to confront their own darkness and confusion. The Greek word for devil, which the gospel uses for Jesus’ tempter, means literally “one who throws things about” or “one who creates confusion.” So when I say that I met the devil I mean that I met the part of me that is weak, vulnerable, and easily confused. I suspect all of us can resonate with this. Most of us probably don’t think that Jesus could be tempted in that way. But the gospel of the temptation in the wilderness tells us that the tempter tries to confuse Jesus:
If you are the son of God, turn these stones to bread. If you want to possess the kingdoms of the earth, worship me.
If you are God’s son, throw yourself from the parapet of the temple, and see if the angels catch you! In this trial of confusion Jesus comes to affirm more clearly what it means for him to be God’s son and for him to rely solely on God. The accounts of the temptations all end with the reminder that the tempter would return. Most scholars believe the returning temptation happens on the cross when Jesus is tempted to feel that his suffering and death represent God’s abandonment, and not, what we believe that moment truly to be, the opening to the resurrection. Yes, those thirty days of mine were more sobering than romantic or idyllic. I had a chance to confront myself more clearly than I had before. And the chance to be closer to God. Lent for each of us is a desert, a silent retreat. Lent is a chance to confront the darkness within. A chance to be closer to God.

Deepening our Faith in Lent
Monday, April 8, 2019 7 PM — Fr. Mike Vetrano
Being a Catholic and a person of Faith in Challenging times
These are difficult times for the Church and for all of us who belong. Each day seems to bring more difficult news of scandals, questions, and problems. What
does it mean? How can we continue to be people of faith in this wintery season?
Tuesday April 9, 2019 7PM — Erin Baudille The importance of Faith
(And how we can pass it to our Youth) Erin will share her experiences and the struggles of her own faith life with a focus on God’s mercy and healing. Having worked with teenagers for over 15 years, she has some great insights into helping our young Catholics recognize their value in the eyes of God. This evening will be a perfect time to reflect on God’s presence in your life and will also help guide attendees on being an important component in helping others realize just how deep God’s love for them is.
Erin Baudille, a wife, a mother of two, and a youth minister who currently works with the Catholic Ministry Team, who provides our Confirmation Retreat each year.
This evening will include an opportunity to pray together before the Blessed Sacrament.

Harmony: Keeping in Balance, Part 1, is a six lesson Bible study that helps us to get a grip on our lives by looking at the importance of authenticity, setting priorities, managing expectations, and having healthy relationships. We’ll also explore finding a balance between mediocrity and perfectionism so that we can become the women God created us to be without stressing or striving.
All Women seeking to find balance and harmony in their busy lives are welcome to join us for a six week bible study beginning on Wednesday March 13, 2019 from 4—5 p.m. in the meeting room of the Parish Rectory building. Dedicate your hearts during Lent to finding the peace that only God can provide. For more info or to register contact Jeannine.

We all experience temptations, but hopefully nothing as extreme as the temptations Jesus experienced as
described in Sunday’s Gospel. Jesus had the power to resist his temptations, but we might not be quite as
strong. Nevertheless, this Gospel invites us to think about the temptations we do experience and to work on
ways to reject them. When we’re tempted to eat too much, to eat what we know is bad for us, or to hunger for
other material goods, let’s remember Jesus’s response to the devil: “One does not live on bread alone.” When
we’re tempted to compromise our integrity in exchange for worldly benefits, let’s remember Jesus’s message
to worship God, and God alone to serve. And when we think we can take dangerous risks because we’re
counting on God to save us, let’s remember not to put God to the test. We may not be Jesus, but we can apply
his lessons to our humble lives.
