5 INCHES OF FABULOUS

Laura Merling | @magicmerl SVP, Applications Enablement

15.4 female Fortune 500 corporate officers

14.8 female Fortune 500 board seats

6.7 female Fortune 500 top earners

2.4 female Fortune 500 CEOs

46.3 women in the U.S. labor force %

Positive Strides

18 women now running Fortune 500 companies...a new record. While still too low, the number of Fortune 500 board seats held by women has nearly doubled over the past 5 years.

Women hold 51.4% of managerial/professional jobs -- up from 26.1% in 1980.

Women dominate 13 of 15 job areas cited for growth over the next decade.

Women-led tech startups generate higher revenues per dollar of invested capital and have lower failure rates than men.

Over 60% of all college degrees globally now earned by women.

It’s time to stop focusing on this...

...and start focusing on this: Societal trends point to a world where more businesses are run by people with...

...more than these.

modern, post-industrial society is simply better suited to women?

WHAT IF

Researchers at Columbia Business School and the University of Maryland analyzed data on the top 1,500 U.S. companies from 1992 to 2006 to determine the relationship between firm performance and female participation in senior management. Firms that had women in top positions performed better, and this was especially true if the firm pursued what the researchers called an “innovation intensive strategy,” in which, they argued, “creativity and collaboration may be especially important”—an apt description of the future economy. The same study ranked America’s industries by the proportion of firms that employed female executives, and the bottom of the list reads like the ghosts of the economy past: shipbuilding, real estate, coal, steelworks, machinery and telecommunications.
