Flax• Flax with the binomial
name Linum usitatissimum, . It is a food and fiber crop that is grown in cooler regions of the world. The textiles made from flax are known in the West as linen, and traditionally used for bed sheets, underclothes and table linen.
Flax fibers
• Flax fibers are amongst the oldest fiber crops in the world and the use of flax for the production of linen goes back 5000 years
• .Flax fiber is soft, lustrous and flexible. • It is stronger than cotton fiber but less
elastic. • The best grades are used for linen
fabrics such as damasks, lace and sheeting.
• Coarser grades are used for the manufacturing of twine and rope.
• Fibers are pulled through the teeth of combs, beginning with the coarse one. The short fibers break off used for inferior quality Lenin called Tow linen. Then the spinning process is carried out-

Properties of Flax Fiber• 70% is composed of cellulose,• it cannot provoke allergies,• absorbs humidity • allows the skin to breathe• therefore it is very indicated in the
manufacture of summer articles.• Very resistant
it can be washed many times without alteration, rather it becomes softer
• Having very low elasticity, linen cloths do not deform themselves.
