FLOOD PROTECTION DAM AT ALAMERAT HEIGHTS

Facts Project DescriptionThe Amerat flood protection dam was completed by end of February 2012 and is fullyoperational. The dam is the first of seven planned by the Ministry of Water Resources aspart of the Wadi Adai flood protection project.

The construction of the earthfill/ rockfilldam with 22 million m³ of storage capacity will givesignificant protection to low-lying areas against floods. It will also include two concreteservice spillways and two bottom outlets to empty the reservoir and to allow downstreamrecharge in the wadi beds. It is one of the dam's means to protect Qurm from floods.

The total length of the dam scheme is more than 5 km. The length of the dam structures is3.98 km incl. service spillways. The height of the dam is 24m above ground level. Thecontract also comprises a 1.5km long bypass channel, 4 saddle dams and a diversiondam.
