Flower Parts and Functions

Petals

Usually bright in color, scented and may produce nectar (a sugary solution) to attract pollinating insects.

Anther

Contains pollen sacs filled with pollen grains. Each pollen grain contains a male nucleus (gamete).

Filament

The thread-like structure that holds anther in best position to release pollen grains.

Stigma

A platform with a sticky surface on which the pollen grains land.

Style

A hollow structure that holds the stigma in the best position to receive pollen grains.

Ovary

1- Contains ovules (female gametes).2- Develops into a fruit after fertilization.

Ovules

1- Contains the female nucleus (gametes).2- Fuses with the male nucleus to form the seed.

Sepals

Green in color, they protect the flower bud.

Stamen

The male part of the flower (anther and filament).

Carpel

The female part of the flower (stigma, style, and the ovary).
