view Some time ago I was given a 16 year old Canon PowerShot Pro90 IS digital camera and, a little later, a copy of “Photography And The Art Of Seeing” by Canadian photographer and educator Freeman Patterson. The camera was in great order and still working well. After reading Freeman’s book I was enthused and keen to make some images and decided to use the Canon as I had the close-up lens to go with it. I was pleased with the results and made this collage with four images I thought went well together. As you can see the second image “Handles” had vignetting in the corners so I decided to crop it square and convert it to a hi-key one. Images are not about specific ‘things’ but about colour, form and feelings. Max

Library There have been quite a few new books added to the Photography section at the Timaru District Library. “Wild Encounters” is a collection of amazing close-up wildlife images in black and white by photographer David Yarrow. As soon as I saw the name Michael Kenna I just had to grab his book “Forms Of Japan”. I wasn’t disappointed. Stunning images in black and white. “Exodus” and “Kuwait” are both by another master of black and white Sabastio Salgado. Both Kenna and Salgado feature in “50 Contemporary Photographers You Should Know” by Florian Heine. “Patient - Portraits From A Doctors Surgery” has been on the shelf for a while and is full of sensitive black and white portraits by Dr Chris Read. And from the Geraldine library, but not in the photography section, “Black Beauties: Iconic Cars” by Rene Straud. Not black and white photography but black cars beautifully lit and photographed. All these books are well worth reading. Max
