FOCUS ON RICEAN SGS CORPORATE NEWSLETTER FOR AGRICULTURAL SERVICES

MANAGE THE RISKS TO RICE IN TRANSPORTATIONInternational trade in rice keeps growing. This makes for good business opportunities. However, shipping this hygroscopic product around the globe in ships and containers increases the risk of caking, mould and rot as a direct result of condensation occurring during transit.

In its raw state rice is hygroscopic – it has a natural moisture content but at the same time the potential to absorb, retain or release water from the atmosphere. This risk is increased when rice is transported in ships and/or containers as they can be impacted by atmospheric and environmental conditions and cause any water vapour to condensate. Moisture damage is the source of a significant number of cargo damage claims.

VENTILATION ON BOARD

Dry cargo vessels are fitted with natural and/or mechanical ventilation systems but in practice, controlling temperatures, and thereby condensation is challenging. Air and water temperatures vary across latitudes. As a vessel and its cargo travel from one climate to another something as simple as a cold hull ploughing through warm waters is enough to trigger condensation.

CAUSES

Condensation occurs as a result of temperature differences between a

cargo, its container surfaces and/or the air around it. A warm cargo in a cold container/ship’s hold will warm the air that surrounds it causing condensation on cold steel surfaces, which then turns into droplets and falls onto the rice (known as ship sweat). The rice then absorbs this moisture damaging it beyond use. Similarly, a cold cargo and hold subjected to warming from external air and sea temperatures condensation (known as cargo sweat) may form as dew on exposed surfaces, including the cargo, causing damage.

CARGO PROTECTION

Carriers can take steps to minimise the risk of condensation and subsequent moisture damage claims. As previously mentioned dry cargo vessels are fitted with natural and/or mechanical ventilation systems.

Preventing, or at the very least reducing, contact between the rice and hold steelwork is the most effective method of protection. It significantly reduces the risk of contact with condensation. The risk of condensation can be exacerbated

by the proximity of a container/hold to warm surfaces, such as engine room bulkheads or other latent heat sources.

The most common solution for rice cargoes is the use of desiccants (hygroscopic substances) and/or moisture barrier paper to avoid problems associated with condensation.

MONITORING

Carriers should maintain accurate ventilation records which detail measurements taken in the hold of dewpoints, temperatures and weather events, all of which can impact cargo quality. These records will also record actions taken by the carrier to mitigate the risk of condensation occurring.

Dear Customer,

Global rice production is expected to reach new records in 2013-14, exceeding 497 million tons for the first time and traded volumes of approximately 38 million tons. However, the dynamics of the market are constantly changing, creating both opportunities and challenges for exporters and importers alike. China is set to become the world’s largest importing destination (once a major rice exporter), whilst Thailand’s domestic support scheme has resulted in lower exports in recent years.

Through our comprehensive and dedicated international network, SGS is able to mitigate our client’s risks throughout the agricultural supply chain, all over the world. Our professional and well trained staff are able to provide Inspection, Testing, Fumigation and Collateral Management services, tailoring specific packages and services to meet all our client’s needs.

SGS delegates will be delighted to discuss the many ways we can help you at the 5th annual TRT, World Rice Conference in Hong Kong, 19-21 November.

GRANT BEDFORDVice President - South East Asia Pacific

This newsletter provides you with all the SGS contact points to meet your requirements. We look forward to working with you in the future.

PAKISTAN In Pakistan‘s agrarian economy rice plays many roles. It is the second staple food, delivers more than 2 million tones to our national food requirements and contributes to the country‘s foreign exchange earnings. Agricultural services in Pakistan are supported by SGS’ state of the art ISO 17025 accredited agriculture and food testing laboratory.

Across the country, rice is grown under diverse climatic and edaphic conditions. Basmati rice predominates in the traditional rice tract of Punjab. In Sawat, in high altitude mountain valleys, japonica rice is grown, while in south KPK, Sindh and Baluchistan, long grain heat tolerant tropical rice (coarse rice) is grown.

SGS Pakistan provides weighing, sampling, analysis, loading supervision, tally, fumigation and pest control services, as well as evaluation/assessment of weight and quality for many thousands of tons of rice.

IN WAREHOUSE CARGO FUMIGATION

Cargo fumigation in the warehouse is usually completed beneath tarpaulin covers, or by sealing the entire warehouse, to avoid leakage of fumigant. The area surrounding the lot is also sprayed with World Health Organisation (WHO) approved pesticides for optimum results.

IN CONTAINER CARGO FUMIGATION

Container loading is the most common export method. Exported goods, which are packed into shipping containers, are fumigated, and the containers are then allowed to be dispatched. Subsequently, a fumigation certificate is issued for the treated contents and the container. Treatments vary depending on the destination of the cargo; the relevant fumigation standards are applied.

IN SHIP HOLD CARGO FUMIGATION

Pest infestation is common in cargo onboard vessels and ships. It is essential to take charge of the situation and eliminate pests. In the case of bulk cargo in vessel holds, fumigation is conducted by placing perforated PVC pipes, through manholes and the hold-top.

TESTING SERVICE

SGS Pakistan offers highly sophisticated testing services for rice exporters to help them remain competitive in export markets. The newly developed analyses include:

PESTICIDE RESIDUE ANALYSIS

MRL (maximum residue limits) are set by regulatory authorities for pesticides and define acceptable levels. We conduct pesticide residue analysis in accordance with AOAC methods, to ensure consumer safety.

MYCOTOXINS

Liquid chromatography is used to identify and quantify the presence of toxins.

GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM (GMO) TESTING

GMOs are regulated and monitored by many countries. Our laboratory uses real time PCR to detect genetic modification.

BASMATI RICE AUTHENTICATION THROUGH DNA ANALYSIS

Basmati rice authentication conducted using DNA analysis offers scalable throughput and rapid results. The tape station estimates the level of non-basmati rice in a batch by producing different sized microsatellite PCR products.

GERMINATION TESTING

Germination testing is conducted in accordance with industry standards, the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) and the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA).

VISUAL ANALYSIS OF RICE FOR IDENTIFICATION

SGS Pakistan also provides services such as supervision loading, sampling, container cleanliness checking and fumigation for rice.
