#1 Topic- System of Laws

• Early law carved onto 12 tablets for all to see

• Other laws added later

• A person accused of a crime was innocent until proven guilty (USA)

#2– Development of Aqueducts

• Aqueduct = a canal-like structure made out of concrete

• Used to bring water to people in cities from mountains miles away

#3 – Latin Language

• Official language of the Empire

• Many could understand it (big +)

• Many English words today come from ancient Latin.

#4 – Spread of Christianity

• Early on, many Christians were hated and killed.

• Soon, more Romans adopted Christianity, including Emperor Constantine

• By 395AD, Christianity became official religion.

Circus Maximus = An arena in Rome where spectators would watch Christians fight for their lives or be eaten by lions.

#5 – Greater Freedom for Women

• Early on, women had few rights

• Later, women given more protection under the law.

• Women could own property and businesses

#6 – Development of the Dome

• Dome = Roof formed by rounded arches

• Built to be very strong

• Dome structures are still built today using Roman ideas

#7 – Network of Concrete Roads

• Highways built to unify distant parts of the empire

• By year 100AD, thousands of miles of concrete roads connected cities in the empire.

This is an actual Roman road that still exists today.

#8 – Roman Republic

• Republic = a government where citizens vote for their leaders

• When? 509-27 B.C. • No single class of

people could control the whole government (shared power)
