• Set up a Type 2.

Type 2: Define a compound subject, a compound predicate,

and a compound sentence.

• Examples:– Anna and Gabby will sing in the talent show.– Gabby will sing and dance in the talent show.– Anna will sing, and Gabby will dance in the

talent show.

– Compound subject: TWO subjects doing ONE action• Anna and Gabby will sing in the talent show.

– Compound predicate: ONE subject that is doing TWO actions• Gabby will sing and dance in the talent show.

– Compound sentence: Two simple sentences joined by a comma + conjunction.• Anna will sing, and Gabby will dance in the

talent show.

A Fragment is…• An incomplete thought.• Missing a subject or a verb or both.• Examples:

– Went to the store to buy brownie mix. Missing a subject

– Correction: My dad went to the store to buy brownie mix.

– Tomorrow the brownie mix. Missing a verb– Correction: Tomorrow the brownie mix is on sale.

– At the grocery store. Missing subject & predicate

– Correction: We shop at the grocery store.

• Run-on example: The store was really packed with people there must have been a big sale today.

– Correction #1: Break into two simple sentences• The store was really packed with people. There must have

been a big sale today.

– Correction #2: Add a conjunction and a comma. This is a compound sentence.• The store was really packed with people, so there must have

been a big sale today.

Let’s Practice: correct the run-on errors

1. We were really busy at the restaurant tonight. I waited tables straight through from 3:30 to 11:30 I never sat down for even one break.

2. My dog had to go to the vet today. She cried and cried when they clipped her toenails but then she wagged her tail when they gave her a shot.

3. The book we had to read for class was really long my teacher doesn’t seem to understand that we have other classes to read for too.
