DescriptionThis online version of Maryland’s Pavement
Marking Student Manual focuses on three
areas. The first section introduces students
to pavement marking standard practices and
defines the functions and characteristics of
longitudinal and transverse markings. In the
second part of the course students are pre-
sented with a large array of pavement marking
materials including reflective glass beads, traf-
fic paint, thermoplastic, epoxy resin, polyester
resin, preformed tape and pavement markers.
Manufacturing, application, and evaluation
methods are provided for each of the materials
addressed. The third section of the course re-
views three main aspects of pavement marking
installation, namely: installation procedures
and quality control, equipment necessary for
proper installation, and eradication of obsolete
markings. Additional resources include a short
bibliography, contacts for information on state
specifications, and links to six video demon-
strations of pavement marking installation.
MARTCP CertificationAfter completion of the Pavement Marking
course, any student is eligible to become certi-
fied through the Mid-Atlantic Region Technician
Certification Program (MARTCP). In order to
become certified, a student must complete
and pass a hands-on practical and written
exam given by the State of Maryland. Stu-
dents must contact Maryland State Highway
Administration (MDSHA) directly to register for
the hands-on practical and exam (contact in-
formation on CITE web site). There is a fee of
$50 payable to Maryland SHA in order to take
the practical and exam.
Course ObjectivesUpon completion of the course, participants
will be able to:
• Explain the concepts of retroreflectivity,
refraction, refractive index of glass, and
assessment of reflectivity
• Discuss the properties, evaluation, and
application of reflective glass beads
• Describe various aspects (components,
characteristics, and application process)
of pavement marking materials such as
traffic paint, liquid and preformed
thermoplastics, epoxy and polyester
resins, and preformed tape
• Compare the characteristics and
installation constraints of the three
most common types of raised
pavement markers
• List items that must be monitored
closely through application
• Distinguish between the characteristics
of long-liners and hand-liners
• Recall the recommended procedure for
pre-application inspection
• Discuss several aspects of quality
control
• Describe several methods of
eradication and some of their
potentially undesirable side effects
