The Big 3

1. Higher Ed Assumptions & Processes

What is a degree worth?

This is a question about VALUE.

Employability Access Brand

Post-MOOC Narratives

“Coursera provides universal access to

the world’s best education…”

Credentials to advance your

career, built & recognized by industry leaders

Get your nano-degrees, certificates & specializations

Get a MicroMaster’s for graduate study

Professionals seek programs where they can get credit for their work experience, customize their

education (and $$).

Undergraduates are often taking similar (or the same courses) as graduate students.

Shouldn’t they also have flexibility, options, & choice?

What are the new models?1.27.16 Vox

Everything is in question

as we strive to reimagine & rethink our institutions to create a culture of innovation.

2. Data & Measurement

If your value is in question then evidence is the answer. This is all about ACCOUNTABILITY.

We really do love data…

Results from google image search: “We love data”

We measure our own data: number of steps, heart rate & calorie intake. We love data!

We have all kinds of analytics: web analytics, business analytics, academic analytics, learning analytics, predictive analytics, and prescriptive

analytics. Analytics are seemingly limitless!

We have intelligent tutors, smart machines, adaptive courseware & machine learning. These are fairly

common terms with definitions not commonly understood as yet.

Online testing is almost banal. This common practice (“digital assessment”) is another source of data to be

collected, measured, benchmarked, & added to the mix.

Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.

“”

• Are we measuring what we think we are? • Does it actually help us make useful academic interventions? • Who owns the data and how long do we keep it? • What assumptions are the algorithms based upon?• Lots of opportunities to learn, engage, do research, be present

3. Mobile Everywhere

3. Mobile Everywhere

Mobile is not new but the expectations for infrastructure, security, T&L, research, banking, etc. means we want data flowing literally everywhere - even at 30,000 feet above the Earth!

This has propelled mobile to a 2016 IT priority.

Access has become the air that we breathe.

Summary

These are exciting times! We find ourselves on a rollercoaster. The dips, the thrills, the speed can all be invigorating and frightening.

We are all in it together & can build the future we desire though thoughtful, collective intentionality. We have agency. Let’s use it!
