than pursuing ‘top of the class’ with
regard to learning disposition .
On such, and as promised boys, I did
(slowly at first) crack on with my New
Year resolution of cycling into work,
up and over the Surrey Hills, on
occasion. My ‘personal best’ has
improved from 65mins to 54mins with
room for improvement. On Sunday, I
entered a cycling competition and
many people beat me. I did not win a
gold medal, or even a silver one. I had
a good go and finished well, with a
pleasing average speed. Next year I
hope to do better. Such is the example
and attitude I’d really like to instil in
the boys with all things learning. It is
much better to define yourself with
good standards, but to avoid
unnecessary stress and worry on that
journey.
Enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend and
the ½ term break.
John Towers
Headmaster
Dear Parents
A lovely ½ term and we’ve been lucky
with the glorious weather across sports
fixtures and many a happy play time on
the field. A strong finish this week saw a
delightful concert from the Reception
classes for their families … this is a cohort
of real character and some talent. With
music, we also had a couple of days of
boys throughout the school taking grade
exams across all sizes and shapes of
musical instruments. Today, we have the
House Tennis Competition to enjoy.
A very happy week too for our Deputy
Head, Mr Fitzgerald, who has sprinted up
to Scotland, kilt in hand, to be ready for
his wedding tomorrow; our very best
wishes for the occasion.
When we return from the half term break,
the senior boys will have subject
assessments as we move to report writing.
By assessing the boys regularly we know
where they are and where they need to go
next with learning. We don’t need to
stress them out or be over demanding;
pursuing a ‘personal best’ can be better

1H Seyon for delivering his lines
and learning the songs so well for
the play. Well done, Seyon!
1S Lachlan for great effort and
enthusiasm during rehearsals for
‘Save Our Planet’. Well done,
Lachlan!
2H Ismail for excellent story
writing.
2S Krish for sensible and
responsible behaviour in school.
3H Sulaymaan for his splendid
work illustrating types of seed
dispersal; a delight to look at.
3S Rayyan for his reading
progress this term. Keep it up!
Reception boys had a wonderful trip on
Monday to Surrey Wildlife Trust, Nower
Wood. All of our staff commented on the
beautiful setting, the professional staff
that ran the trip and the activities that
were organised for the boys. The whole
day was planned to perfection and both
classes were exceptionally well behaved.
Roger and Josie, our guides, also
commented on the wonderful behaviour
of our boys. Well done to you all!
The morning of the trip consisted of
hunting for mini beasts under logs and
branches, shaking trees and catching any
mini beasts on a white sheet, inspecting
them under a magnifying pot and looking
through a replica of a bug eye! After our
lunch, it was off to do a bit of pond
dipping to see what the boys could find
in the pond! Well done to Constantine
who caught a newt in his net!

On Thursday 17th May, we were treated
to the Year 3 concert and it was a lovely
occasion! The concert went with a real
swing and the parents and families of
our boys were entertained and charmed
by the musical talents of the boys. The
individual performances demonstrated
real accomplishment, particularly in
boys so young. It was especially
touching to see Vansh supporting his
younger brother, Ansh, by playing the
left hand part for him. The class
performances were excellent with all the
boys giving their best. Well done, boys
and Mr Meyers.
Our Special Award this week
goes to:
Arnav for having enthusiasm for
each new topic in Nursery.
Our Students of the Week are:
Aesan in Tigers for excellent
behaviour and contribution on
our trip.
Oba in Monkeys for excellent
asking and answering of
questions during the school trip.
The form assembly this week was
confidently taken by 1H. The theme
was ’Our Environment ‘and the boys
also recited their lines from ‘Save Our
Planet‘. The rest of the boys thought
that they did very well and things are
looking very good for our play after
half term. Many thanks to parents for
sending in the costumes. For our
dress rehearsal we are welcoming
pupils from Robin Hood and Sutton
High School.
The Student Council met on Tuesday
morning and this term our form
representatives are Charlie, Lewis,
Sulaiman, Aamir, Jonas and Umar.
The boys all made useful
contributions to the meeting whose
focus was the environment and the
boys had a constructive discussion
about recycling. They suggested that
there should be a group of school
‘litter pickers’ and monitors.
We all hope the boys enjoy a well-
deserved rest at half term .We look
forward to seeing parents at our

Chess Success!
Our chess teams were in competitive action
at Pontins, Camber Sands at the weekend
and the U9 team did well to finish 13th= out
of the 36 qualifying teams. This earned them
'silver medals' on the basis that they finished
in the middle third of the tournament.
The U11 team stole the show by finishing
3rd. This means that they have qualified for
the 3-day Final in the last week of term in
July.
This is in addition to the other National final
that the U11 squad have qualified for on the
last 2 days of term. This is a truly amazing
achievement for this group of year 5 and 6
boys.
All the boys were truly magnificent and
although chess is often thought of as an
individual game, a result like this can only
be obtained with a positive team spirit. A
team can only do well if the members of it
support each other through the high and
lows of an event. It's a well done all round
from me.
Thanks also for all the parental support
without which we would not even be able to
take part.

So, now that the excitement of the
beautiful Royal Wedding is over, it’s
time to turn our attention to the Football
World Cup!
We hope you all have Monday 18th June
in the diary for the England v Tunisia
match. This is England’s first group
match and will be shown on the big
screen in the Main Hall at Homefield.
This is a free event, so why not make the
most of gathering the family, and watch
the match live with friends.
U11 ‘A’ Team Cricket Half Term report
The initial win against Micklefield was
most encouraging; however the level of
the opposition has become a little
stronger in more recent games. As the
figures demonstrate, Anuj and Ollie
have contributed fantastically with the
bat and compiled innings of great
maturity. Abqar and Tom have assisted
well.
There were exciting run chases against
both Chinthurst and Hazelwood but
unfortunately Homefield came up short
on both occasions. Yesterday, we fielded
a rather depleted team against
Hawthorns but again there were
positives to take from the game. Tom
and Anuj asked questions with their spin
bowling as they have done all season.
Kwame’s fielding was outstanding and
set an excellent example which really
enthused the team. He will now be
selected for the ‘A’ team after half term
on the basis of his fielding alone! The
final two matches against Reigate St
Mary’s and Willington offer
opportunities to balance the results
sheet!
1.Micklefield 114 for 6 from 20 overs
Anuj S (3 overs, 2 runs, 2 wickets)
Tom H (3 overs, 9 runs, 1 wicket)
Homefield 115 for 1 from 13.2 overs
Ollie H 51 Not out
*Homefield Win by 6 wickets
There will be a bar and snacks available
to purchase on the night. Your free
tickets can be downloaded and printed
from Classlist via the ‘Events Page’. We
hope many of you will come and make
this a memorable evening!
Shortly after, we have the Summer Fun
Day on Saturday 30th June. This is a
great day out for all the family, and this
year the theme will be around the
“World Cup”. Please keep the date free
in your diaries!
We hope you all have a lovely half term!
2. Chinthurst 106 for 5
Anuj S (4 overs, 8 runs, 1 wicket)

Ollie H 30
*Homefield Lost by 13 runs
3. Hazelwood 137 for 5
Oliver H (4 overs 19 runs 1 wicket)
Anuj S (4 overs, 20 runs, 2 wickets)
Abqar K (2 overs, 6 runs, 2 wickets)
Homefield 121 for 6
Anuj S 41 not out
*Homefield Lost by 16 runs
4. Homefield 90 all out
Anuj S 38
Hawthorns 91 for 3 from 12.4 overs
Anuj S (4 overs, 19 runs, 1 wicket)
Tom H (4 overs, 20 runs, 2 wickets)
*Homefield Lost by 7 wickets
On Wednesday 23rd May, the Year 6 ‘C’
team enjoyed an 18 run victory over
their Hawthorns counterparts. After
losing the toss, Homefield were put in to
bat and made 301, with Vinicius hitting
two lovely fours and Shahzain and Zia
running quickly between the wickets.
Homefield restricted Hawthorns to 283
in reply with an excellent display of
accurate bowling and sharp fielding.
Luca bowled a fantastic over and took a
good catch, while Alex set an example in
the field with two direct run outs. Well
done to Homefield’s Year 6 ‘C’ team!

Tweet of the Week
Split into five teams based on the
most successful teams at the recent
Commonwealth Games, it was New
Zealand who won the relay
competition but all countries were
awarded many medals throughout
the sessions due to their extremely
high levels of engagement,
enjoyment and motivation. Well
done to all of Robin Hood’s Year 5
students for their efforts and
enthusiasm and to their staff for
their brilliant organisation. We look
forward to the partnership resuming
next year!
Year 4 Cricket v Hazelwood
On Thursday 17th May, Homefield’s Under 9
‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams played cricket against
Hazelwood School. After taking some good
catches to restrict Hazelwood to 230, our ‘C’
team confidently scored 250 after they ran
well between the wickets to secure a 20 run
victory. Our ‘B’ team also enjoyed the
winning feeling; Sami bowled a maiden over
and Rishabh only went for three runs from
his two overs to leave Hazelwood on 267 at
the end of their innings. In response,
William, Henry, Davide and Zak each hit a
boundary as Homefield scored 275 from
their 10 overs to win by 8 runs. Back at
Sutton Cricket Club, our ‘A’ team lost six
wickets which would prove to be costly –
despite three brilliant fours by Rory,
Homefield scored 243. Early wickets by
Xavier and Prabodha brought hope, but
strong batting in the middle overs by
Hazelwood saw them safely pass
Homefield’s score as they went on to score
280, although an excellent over by David and
a wicket for Zain prevented further runs.
After half term our ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams will
play Aberdour and Caterham, both at Sutton
Cricket Club.

Sports Outreach Programme - Robin Hood Junior School
After several years of delivering sport to
the pupils of Robin Hood Junior School,
Homefield’s Sports Outreach Programme
took on a different form this year as all 90
of Robin Hood’s Year 5 pupils came to
Homefield on Friday 18th May for a
morning of athletics. The children made
full use of our athletics facilities; they
were taught high jump, long jump, shot
put, hurdles and relay changeover, before
they competed in team relay races at the
end of the morning.

Year 5 Lullingstone Fieldtrip Geography and Classics
On Wednesday 16th May, Year 5
enjoyed a great fieldtrip to
Lullingstone Country Park.
Half the day was spent in the River
Darent, measuring the width, depth
and speed (using stop watches and
dog biscuits; very eco-friendly)! The
local park education officer, Donna,
gave an excellent insight into how
the river had changed over time, and
its importance to local tourism and
recreation. The boys were able to
gather some of their own river data
and later plot their own river cross
section and field sketch in their
Geography lessons.
A stroll down the river led to the
Roman Villa. The villa dates back to
around AD 100, and developed to
suit the tastes and beliefs of
successive wealthy owners, reaching
its peak of luxury in the mid-4th
century. The boys were able to view
the spectacular mosaics and prints of
the rare wall paintings, a heated
bath-suite and a ‘house-church’. This
was a wonderful opportunity for the
boys to enrich their Classics lessons
and view some Roman artefacts.
A slightly chillier day than the rest
of the week, but a great day out in
the park, in the river and the villa!
