MISSION STATEMENT AD INTRA (for ourselves):
To deepen our experience of Jesus Christ through a vibrant
sacramental life and our common liturgical worship. AD EXTRA (to the world):
To reach our vocational fulfillment individually and as a
community by engaging our neighbor with the Gospel Message.
Ig le s ia Catól ica de La Santa Cruz
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK—DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR 2
The World in View from a Believer’s
Perspective
W hat is it with the Superstitions? I
keep travelling back to this
mountain looking for the perfect
shot because I am captivated by its
natural beauty. I am not deterred by harsh dullness of
cloudless skies or the distance to get there and set up for a
shot before sunset. I just keep at it until something unique
and captivating shows up in my camera’s viewfinder.
Here’s the point: great sinners have found their way into
the Church through the attractive force of Catholicism even
when individual pastors or ministers have failed to
represent Christ’s immense goodness. Oscar Wilde was
such man who felt the disappointment and yet, found
openness to the Church. His love for God and the Church
was larger than the failings of men. Take the time to copy
this line into your browser or visit the Church website and
copy the link from there. It’s a fascinating read.

Your Pastor, Fr. Larry
El Mundo que se ve desde la
perspectiva de un creyente ¿ Qué es lo que tienen las Superstitions? Yo voy y
vuelvo a esta montaña buscando la foto perfecta
porque me cautiva su belleza natural. No me

planning and thank you for your continued support of
Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Dear Parishioners,
I wish to offer thanks to those who’ve
participated in the planning study at Holy
Cross. The response is strong, but we do
need input from everyone in our community.
Completing the survey will take just a few
minutes.
The deadline to return your completed
survey is Tuesday, Jan. 30. You may return it
to the office or place it in the offertory
basket at any of the Masses.
You may also complete the survey online by
going to steiergroup.com/survey, clicking on
Holy Cross Catholic Church and entering the
password: holycross2018.
Again, thank you for your feedback and for
participating in this important effort. We will
share the results as soon as we receive
them and have a chance to review them.
Gratefully,
Fr. Larry Merta

The CDA supports community and
charitable organizations that assist
individuals and families in need or in crisis.
These organizations improve the lives of
thousands of people across 4 Arizona
counties (Mohave, Maricopa, Coconino and
Yavapai), serving local communities beyond the
boundaries of any one parish. Through the CDA, faith is
nurtured from birth to adulthood through our schools,
parishes, and religious education programs.
Organizations like Catholic Charities and Foundation for
Senior Living help strengthen families and assist
individuals in crisis. The CDA also supports the
education and formation of seminarians, priests and
deacons. For more information or to donate online, visit
dphx.org/cda.
Thank you for your support.

St. Vincent de Paul's life-saving works to the poor could never

community. Next week-end our Saint Vincent de Paul
members will be outside all the Masses with their blue
buckets for donations that make these miracles happen.
May you be blessed for whatever you can give.

Join us in our continuing Adult Faith
Formation study program featuring
renown theologian, author, and national
speaker, Dr. Edward Sri. We are
exploring the classical view of morality
and find that it’s not merely a set of
guiding principles for theoretical
situations—it is an entire way of life.
Session 3: Real Freedom, Real Love
Do you think that you are free to live
your life to the fullest and achieve
ultimate happiness? In the last session
we examined the virtues as the skills
necessary to live our relationships well.
These same skills make us truly free. In
this session we’ll look at what real
freedom means and discover what kind
of instructions God has given us for
living in that freedom.
Books can be purchased from the
Parish Office for $5 ($14.40 on
Amazon) .
Participant study guides will be
provided at all sessions. Donations to
cover the cost of materials is greatly
appreciated.
The videos and participant guides can
be found on FORMED.org (Parish Code
BR4Z9E) for those who cannot attend
or who have to make up a session.

At one time, most family caregivers were females
– wives, daughters, granddaughters, nieces and
sisters. In the past twenty years, the face of
caregiving has changed as more men step up to assume the
tasks of helping their loved ones. According to AARP, today 40
percent of caregivers are men and the vast majority of them
are caring for a loved one with dementia. While many of the
resources for caregivers are geared toward women, a growing
number of caregiving resources are becoming male-oriented
and male-friendly. If you are a male caregiver, check out
AARP’s website at www.aarp.org which includes a section for
male family caregivers. If you enter “support for male
caregivers” into the AARP search engine, you will find a link to
take you to “AARP’s New Effort to Support Male Caregivers.”
Men are always welcome at our two support group meetings each
month. Our upcoming meetings are scheduled for Wednesday,
February 14, at 2:30 p.m. in classrooms 1-2 at Mountain Vista
Medical Center, 1301 S. Crismon Road, Mesa and Thursday,
February 22, at 1:30 p.m. in classroom J at Holy Cross. For
questions about caregiving, contact parishioner and support
group facilitator Evelyn Sanchez at 602-882-5197.

here at Church but in society at large. Holy Cross is

Training. This program will educate and empower adults about
how to help prevent abuse.
Join us for a 3 hour session, “Protecting God’s Children for
Adults,” where you will complete a Volunteer Application and sign
a Code of Ethics. In addition, you will learn:
● How to separate the facts from the myths about child sexual
abuse
● How sexual offenders gain access to children
● What to do when you see warning signs in children or adults
This training is mandatory for all employees and volunteers. To
register for a class, please visit or call the Parish Office.

emocionados y
privilegiados de ser los
primeros peregrinos en
la historia de la Iglesia
de Santa Cruz, que
participan en la Jornada
Mundial de la Juventud. ¡Quisiéramos llevarte con
nosotros, pero llevarte en nuestras oraciones!
