Good Luck, Class of 1959!
DR. RUSSELL J. ELLIOTT
Throughout our fou r years in the Franklin High School our class has had a long and va luab le association w ith Dr. E lliott, who this last year was our home room teacher. In our freshman year Dr. E lliott taugh t us W o r ld H istory and Public Speaking. In add it ion to being in charge o f the ce lebration of the 250th A nn iversary o f the b irth o f Benjamin Franklin , he was the fa cu lty advisor o f Franklin's members o f the Riverside N e ighborhood Assembly Youth G roup . Dr. E lliott also th a t yea r revived the D ebating Society, which was m ade up p redom ina te ly o f freshmen.
As sophomores, we a ttended classes under Dr. E llio tt in Public Speaking and M odern European History, as well as in a new Typing course. Besides being con tinua lly active in the R.N.A. o rgan iza tion . Dr. E lliott accom panied a g roup o f sophomores to Bermuda during the Spring Vocation , and trave led frequen tly w ith the Debating Team to upstate New York D ebating League tournaments and the V a lley Forge D ebating Tournam ent as fa cu lty advisor and coach.
Dr. Elliott instructed our jun ior class in Am erican
H istory and in G overnm ent. He acted as the facu lty
adv isor o f our successful Junior Prom a t the Tavern
on the Green, o f the new ly in troduced N a tio n a l
H onor Society chapter, o f the D ebating Team—which
entered the N ew York p riva te school league, and of the Riverside N e ighbo rhood Assembly, o f which he was elected Secretary.
This past year, our senior year, our class pe rhaps pa rtic ipa ted in the most courses and ex tra curr icu lar activities w ith Dr. Elliott. W e studied in his courses on Sociology, Problems o f Am erican Democracy and Music and A rt. W e took trips with him to the perennia l deba ting grounds, upper N ew York State and V a lley Forge, to the N ew York Yacht C lub, to Town Hall to hear Sir Thomas Bee- cham and to the United N ations Festival o f A rt.
In add it ion . Dr. E lliott was facu lty advisor o f this yearbook, com piled by the Senior Class, o f a most successful Senior Prom a t the W a ld o r f , o f the D ebating Team, o f the Honor Society, and o f the Riverside N e ighborhood Assembly. Perhaps most im po rtan t o f a ll. Dr. E lliott accom panied a g roup o f five Senior boys to the East Coast M ode l United N ations a t Brown University, where Franklin rep re sented the nations o f A rgen tina and the Dominican Republic.
Just recently Dr. E lliott received the Freedom Foundation's A w a rd fo r O utstand ing Teaching, a cita tion and a m edal. Because o f this rich ly de served honor and because o f his fou r years as constant advisor and fr iend to the senior class we g ra te fu l ly ded ica te this yea rbook to him.
