Introduction to Symbiota & some portals: doi:10.3897/BDJ.2.e1114

Overview – mini-history of three Neotropical portals• Created, or significantly expanded, in 2012–2016

• Presently housed on an Arizona State University VM server *

• Specific focus on Neotropical occurrence data and collections• Symbiota is quite good "when institutional IT resources are limited"

• We are strongly interested in recruiting/aiding more regional collections

STRI

Arthropods

Flora

* We are happy to "give it up", when it makes sense.

1. STRI Collections: http://stricollections.org/ • Initially set up just for STRI; Panama-wide expansion possible

• 18 collections; 344,000 records; 17,300 species names; 23,300 images

• Among the most natural history data-rich portals in Neotropics• Of note: Checklists, DNA tissues, "TaxaGloss" (multi-lingual traits)

1. STRI Collections: "Show the weevils of the Lake Gatún area"

GUID: c170ff65-af41-4997-8982-80574b1bee43

• > 32k curculionoids (H.P. Stockwell)

• Especially strong in (all) vertebrates• Please see for yourself..

2. Neotropical Flora: http://hasbrouck.asu.edu/neotrop/plantae/ • ASU-initiated project; as an addition to established N.A. portals

• 15 collections; 2.42 million records; 64,600 species names; 128,000 images

• Largely a work in (early-stage) progress, available for additions!• Of note: Mostly snapshot records; though extensive ID matrices coded

3. Neotropical Arthropods: http://hasbrouck.asu.edu/neotrop/entomology/

• ASU-initiated project; as an addition to established N.A. portals

• 11 collections; 544,200 records; 13,700 species names; 8,800 images

• Largely a work in (early-stage) progress, available for additions!• Of note: includes INBio and STRI snapshots; new ASUHIC additions
