“Come in! Marcel is practicing his improvisations for tomorrow and should be nished soon.” (Marcel Dupré’s wife to a visitor)
Isn’t it thrilling to hear an accomplished organist improvise o the bat – possibly in di erent styles – chorale preludes or even whole works on the “queen of musical instruments”, the organ with all its versatility? It is comforting to know that it’s not just a matter of talent. In spite of all its magic, improvisation can be learned and has to be practiced (even for a Marcel Dupré).
This new reader and workbook on organ improvisation by Regensburg Cathedral organist and organ professor Franz Josef Stoiber connects methodological and pedagogical re ections with many exercises and examples. It is geared towards organists with a good basis in playing technique and music theory. In a well-structured and concise manner the author follows the various styles from the 17th to the 21st centuries.
This study and practice book has the potential of becoming standard literature in the training of organists.

Joan Cabanilles (1644–1712), the cathedral organist from Valencia, contributed greatly to the multifaceted organ music of Spain‘s Golden Age. The Iberian organ tradition of the 17th century appears to have reached its climax in his tientos, diferencias and versos. ● The rst two volumes of this edition present a total of 22 of his most appealing and most signi cant tientos.

Vol. 1Early Organ Works / FragmentsBA 9291
Volume 1 of this five-volume complete edition is the first publication to contain all of Franck’s (1822–1890) surviving early organ works, fragments and variants. Special attention has been given to his largest early work, the Fantasy in A major, which was left unpublished during his lifetime and only resurfaced a few years ago. Here Franck already displays his consummate mastery of thematic development.

BA 11222
Glazunov’s (1865–1936) organ works are noted for their distinctive emotionality and underlying heroic mood, characteristic traits of the Russian symphonic style: epic breadth and monumentality as well as a close proximity to folk music, all combined with supreme contrapuntal skill.
This Urtext edition contains not only the well-known Prelude and Fugue in D major op. 93 (1906), Prelude and Fugue in D minor op. 98 (1914) and Fantasy op. 110 (1935) but also the Prelude and Fugue in D minor op. 62 (1899), an expressive piano piece presented here in a revised transcription for symphonic organ by B. L. Sabaneyev (1909).

The court organist Antonio de Cabezón (1510–1566) was rightly regarded by his contemporaries as the leading Spanish organist and keyboard player of the 16th century. His hymns and versets are based on short, decorated harmonisations of the psalm tones. In the tientos, the transformation from vocal motet style to a style of writing suitable for keyboard instruments is perfectly executed.
● This rst scholarly-critical edition contains a selection of Cabezon’s best known works.
“This highly recommended edition goes a long way in o ering such a representative collection, … and will remain the standard anthology for many years.” (The Diapason)
