“The maritime economy is on the cusp of major development, there is a strong need for a sustainable agenda! We are working with Member States to address barriers that prevent EU aquaculture growth and to exchange good practices, in this context local action is very important”. Bernhard Friess, Director for Maritime Policy and Blue Economy, DG MARE Weiden in the Baverian region of Germany was the venue for the most recent FARNET conference which focused on Integrating Aquaculture within local communities.
The seminar aimed to. Raise the capacity of FLAGs to foster integration of aquaculture into their territory taking into account the complexity and diversity of this sector and to stimulate exchange and peer learning between FLAGs interested in supporting their local aquaculture sector.
Although everyone recognises the need for more aquaculture production in Europe all member states are struggling to scale up for various reasons.
The Fisheries Local Action Group ( FLAG) programme is playing a key role in helping communities in coastal and in some countries inland fisheries and aquaculture areas to foster links between many stakeholders. It is also being used to assist in national and transnational cooperation projects where regions benefit from exchanging best practices and networking.
In Ireland the FLAG programme is open for applications all year round and is administered by BIM working closely with 7 regional FLAG boards and i would encourage anyone from the fisheries and aquaculture industry to contact a BIM representative if they have a business ideas which could be developed in their area.

Double Tragedy Safety ReminderThe recent double tragedy on Galway Bay led local fishermen to organise a presentation night to remind others on the importance of always wearing their lifejackets.
The event was attended by Frankie Horne, RNLI Fishing Safety Manager and Tony Brown, Techical Manager of lifejacket producer, Mullion.
Speaking to the Skipper Mike Swan, Lifeboat Operations Manager, Galway Lifeboat Station RNLI said: “Two fishermen lost their lives while going about their daily work at sea. In separate incidents both men fell overboard. In a very short period of time the local fishing communityhas been rocked twice.
“Local fishermen, BIM & RNLI arranged a night , where we would get together and see could we help each other in anyway.
“So on a cold, wet & windy night in early January we all gathered at Galway Lifeboat Station. Frankie Horne (Safety Fishery Manager with RNLI) and Tony Brown
(Technical Manager with Mullion) were in attendance to pass on some safety information. One of the opening comments from Frankie was “Unfortunately this is becoming an all too common event up and down our coast.”
“RESPECT THE WATER”.
The donning of a lifejacket and establishing a means of getting back on board were the main topics up for discussion.
A short video was played which definitely ran a cold shiver up everyone in attendance. The clip had fishermen from our coast in a training pool, demonstrating the difference between having a lifejacket on and not having a lifejacket.
Mike concluded by saying “I personally feel enough is enough, I’ve worked at sea all my life. Everyone is responsible for donning a lifejacket before heading out to sea, just like each time we get in a car we put on a safety belt.”
