Dear Parents and Guardians
The school has been abuzz over the past week due to the introduction of the Resilience Project. Teachers had
a professional development session on Friday evening April 21 and the students had their sessions on
Monday. All the feedback has been very positive and everyone has been talking about the three important
messages around:
Gratitude
Empathy and
Mindfulness.
There will be follow up teaching sessions in the classroom and also a parent information evening on
Tuesday May 9 at 7.00 pm. I highly recommend you attend this evening. It will not only help you
support your children but you also will find it enlightening.
Jarod Ryan and I had two very useful sessions with parents going through Compass and
explaining the applications that are open to parents at the moment. If you are
experiencing any difficulties with accessing Compass please do not hesitate to come to
the office and we will help.
Our Year 6 leaders were excellent ambassadors at the ANZAC Ceremony at the
Templestowe RSL on Thursday April 20. Grant Puglia also arranged a meaningful
ceremony at school for the students on Wednesday April 26.
Thank you to Anna Papamichael for organising the House Cross Country and teachers
and parents for all their work on the day. It was a wintry day, real cross country weather
and the students enjoyed the experience!
Kind regards
Julie

Great News!
Donburn was
mentioned in the State
Budget on Tuesday.
We have been
allocated $1.306
million to refurbish
classrooms and
facilities!
The Resilience Project is
underway with staff receiving
their first of several Professional
Development sessions on
teaching with the Project.
Founder of the project, Hugh van Cuylenburg delivered a mesmerising
presentation about the ease with which we can improve our mental health, and
the mental health of our students through the practice of mindfulness, empathy
and gratitude.
For many of us, it was the best and most meaningful PD we have ever been to.
The students also began their journey with the Project, with a high energy,
incredibly engaging session with Education Manager Martin Heppell.
RESILIENCE
Martin spoke with the children about how
lucky we are, and the importance of voicing
the things they are grateful for (your
children may have come home and started
pointing to things and saying ‘DIS!’).
Everyone at Donburn is so
excited to have commenced
working with the Project, and
hope to see you at our parent
night with Hugh on May 9.

WALK Safely TO
SCHOOL DAY
FRIDAY 19 MAY,
8:30AM
ACTIVE KIDS ARE HEALTHY KIDS
It’s fun you can meet your friends and see things you
would miss while travelling in the car.
It’s good for the environment
less noise and carbon pollution
It’s healthier
great exercise
Tips
Always hold an adult’s hand
when crossing the road. Walk don’t run.
If you live too far from school to walk, ask your parents to park the car 2 blocks further away
than usual and walk to school together.
If you can be ready early, you and your parents can join a group of teachers walking safely to school (weather permitting).
On Friday May 19, teachers will meet students at 8.30 am.
Let’s walk to school together. Come and join us!
ALWAYS WALK TO SCHOOL SAFELY!
We are encouraging all students at Donburn and their carers to walk to
school safely on this day.

WORLD HARMONY DAY CONCERT
FEATURING OUR YEAR 5/6 CHOIR
On 22 March the Donburn Senior Choir went to Manningham Performance
Centre for World Harmony Day.
The night was all about us coming together ‘as one’ and letting everyone know
that they belong.
We preformed a song called Ebony and Ivory by Paul McCartney and Stevie
Wonder. The song represents how the black and white keys on a keyboards
work together to make harmony; so why can’t people.
There were some other performances from other cultures such as an Indian
dance, a Jewish song, a Muslim song, two Christian songs and other primary
schools and a high school.
At the end we were shown a cute
slide show of animals together
that you normally wouldn’t see
together, while we were told
about peace and harmony.
Overall it was great seeing all of
the other performances from all
different cultures, and seeing all
the cultures standing side by side.

On Thursday 27th of April I was lucky enough to attend an inspiring literacy-
based professional development event held by ‘The Kids’ Bookshop & the
School Librarians Association of Victoria.
It was held in the impressive
Library at Xavier College. It
was a lovely chance to
discover and share a range
of new & exciting books.
The head of Library at
Genazzano College Dr Susan La Marca shared her amazing knowledge and
resources. She spoke about incorporating thinking skills and digital technology in
reading response.
LIBRARY NEWS
We then listened to Felice Arena who has recently
written the novel ‘The Boy and the Spy.’
It was lovely to hear about his journey as an author
and I can’t wait to read his latest novel to the
students at Donburn!
Overall the professional development evening was
a great forum for learning and discussion!
Happy reading!

Skeletons are not spooky - your bones give your body shape and help
you stand up.
Did you know:
You have more than 206 bones in your body .
Your skull acts like a bike helmet to protect your brain.
New blood cells are produced inside your bones.
Your teeth are bones too!
See you there!
