NEW DELHI, July 21:

The Election Commissiontoday reserved its order onwhether to make the Congress,the BJP and the DelhiGovernment parties to a petitionon ‘Office of Profit’ that seeksdisqualification of 21 Aam AadmiParty legislators for holding thepost of Parliamentary secretaries.

At today’s meeting, PrashantPatel, who had petitioned beforethe Commission seeking dis-qualification of the MLAs,opposed the plea of Congressand BJP of becoming a party tothe case saying “they wanted topoliticise the issue”.

The Delhi Government tooopposed the plea of interventionby the BJP and the Congress.Rakesh Mehra, representing theDelhi Government, said itshould be made “impleader” asthe AAP dispensation will havea direct impact on the decisionby the EC in the matter.

“We want to implead and donot want intervention as we madethem Parliamentary secretary andwe possess all the documents. TheCommission has sent a question-naire as we are the necessaryparty and not to Congress and theBJP. Any decision will have directand indirect impact on theGovernment,” Mehra said.

Senior advocate and formerExternal Affairs MinisterSalman Khurshid, who is repre-senting Congress, said their pleaof intervention was also

opposed by the 21 AAP MLAs.“We feel in the public inter-

est, the plea should be allowed.Our plea was opposed by theMLAs. The judgment on this isreserved,” he told reporters.

The BJP in its response tothe Delhi Government andPatel’s argument said thisinvolved public money and theycan intervene into the matter.

“We told the ElectionCommission that the MLAsshould face criminal prosecu-tion because the 21 MLAs filedaffidavits with false informationand tried misleading it.(PTI)

Drinking water contaminated in over 70,000 habitations

NEW DELHI, July 21:

More than 70,000 habitations in the country do not have safedrinking water as it is contaminated with fluoride, arsenic andheavy metals among others.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State forDrinking Water and Sanitation Ramesh Chandappa Jigajinagi saidas on July 18, there are 70,807 habitations in the country wherewater is contaminated.

As per the data shared by the minister, Rajasthan has maxi-mum 20,895 such habitations followed by Assam, Jharkhandand Bihar.

Water at more than 36,500 habitations is contaminatedwith iron. At almost 14,000 habitations, fluoride is present inwater.

“All the states have been advised to accord priority to provid-ing safe drinking water in water quality affected habitations withspecial focus on coverage of arsenic and fluoride affected habita-tions,” Jigajinagi said in the reply.

As per the ministry’s plan, 90 per cent of rural populationwould be provided safe drinking water by 2022 through surfacewater based piped water supply schemes, subject to availability offunds. (PTI)
