FSA Parent Night: Spring 2020 Assessments

•Learn basic and grade-specific information about the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA)

•Review the assessment calendar for our students

•Review school wide areas of focus to prepare students

What are the Florida Standards and Florida Standards Assessment?

Florida Standards:• Designed to prepare Florida students for college and career readiness

• Emphasize analytical thinking and problem solving skills

Florida Standards Assessments (FSA): • Provides parents and families, teachers, policy makers, and the general

public with information regarding how well students are learning the Florida Standards

How long are the assessments?

•ELA Writing – 120 minutes (1 session)

•ELA Reading – Two 80 minute sessions

•Math – Two 80 minute sessions

•Science – Two 80 minutes sessions

•A short break is given during each assessment session.

What are some in-school areas of focus to prepare students?

•Instruction, learning tasks and assessments aligned to the Florida Standards

•Differentiated instruction based on students needs as identified on assessments

•Exposure to multiple digital, instructional resources to practice, develop and enhance skills (i.e. iReady)

•Classroom learning assignments and assessments include item types, tools, directions and tasks that students may encounter during FSA testing.

What are some tasks parents & families can focus on to help prepare students?

By staying involved, informed and engaged, parents can help students be successful.

• Read with your children

• Review and discuss their homework

• Communicate with their teachers

• Encourage your student to put forth their best efforts

• Hold your child accountable for their responsibilities (HW, classwork, usage of i-Ready, learning, etc.)

• Ask your child about their school day, their progress, tests, assignments

• Offer positive support to your child

How can I support my student on assessment days?

•Make sure your student gets plenty of sleep the night before the exam.

•Make sure your student has a healthy breakfast.• Research shows that students who are hungry do not do as well and are less

focused than students who have a good breakfast the morning of the test.

•Encourage your student to do their best and show what they know.

What can I ask my student after they have taken the FSA?

•Because the content of statewide assessments is secure, students are asked not to talk about specific test questions, passages, or their responses.

•We encourage parents and families to ask how their child’s day went and continue to offer positive support and feedback.

•Students are asked to sign a Testing Rules Acknowledgement, which states: “Because the content in all statewide assessments is secure, you may not reveal details about the writing prompt or passages to anyone. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting online, for example, on websites like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.”

•While students may not share information about secure test content after testing, this policy is not intended to prevent students from discussing their testing experiences with their parents and families.
