Metro Access Improvements Program
• WMATA’s CIP priorities focus on safety and state of good
repair
• County leads station access improvements to: – Ensure timely completion of projects
– Support increasing density around transit stations
– Improve continuous street-level access to Metrorail stations
– Ensure access points are compatible with communities’ urban design
• Project objectives:1. Improve ADA access and provide elevator redundancy
2. Improve emergency egress
3. Increase access/egress capacity at high ridership stations
4. Upgrade street level elevator exteriors

• Design and construct full entrance at N.
Fairfax & N. Vermont
• New escalators and elevators from street
to tunnel and from mezzanine to platform
• New mezzanine over train platform
• Schedule:
• Completed PE – 2006
• Design – FY17 to FY19
• Construction – FY19 to FY22
• Working Est.: $89.9M (FY15-24 CIP)*
– Funding: NTVA Regional, State, Local and
Developer Contributions – Design phase funded;
construction not fully funded

• Design and construct two ADA accessible
elevators to Metro station from street level in
front of 2200 Clarendon Blvd.
• Replace existing elevator, provide improved
service, and elevator redundancy
• Schedule:

• Design – FY17 to FY18
• Construction – FY18 to FY20
• Working Est.: $16.6M (FY15-24 CIP)*
– Funding: State, Local and Developer

• Full second entrance located on Crystal Drive at
18th Street South
• Preliminary cost estimate: $68M*
• Some local and state funding identified; mostly

• Potential to seek federal grant

• Spring 2014 - feasibility and alternatives study

• Winter/spring 2016 - finalize location and
concept design and update cost estimate
• TBD - design/construction
• Negotiating with WMATA to lead project and
include in WMATA CIP
