WHAT IS A THESIS STATEMENT?
A thesis statement presents your opinions or thoughts on a subject or an issue.
A thesis statement must contain a subject + an opinion.
A thesis statement answers the topic question Why do you want to be a teacher.
WRITING A GOOD THESIS STATEMENT
A good thesis statement is short and simple: it should be no longer than one sentence, regardless of essay length. Good Example: Success is a result of doing the
right things consistently. Bad Example: In a world full of success gurus
and books about success, it becomes ever so more important to delineate the one trait that ultimately determines success: doing the right things consistently.
WRITING A GOOD THESIS STATEMENT
A good thesis statement is limited to one main idea. Good example: The key to successful dieting is
focusing on a specific goal. Bad example: The key to successful dieting is
focusing on a specific goal, which is also the key to successfully running a business and coaching a football team.
WRITING A GOOD THESIS STATEMENT
A good thesis statement is a declarative sentence with no qualifiers (might, maybe, perhaps, etc.): Good example: Lebron James' ability to score,
pass, and rebound make him the league's most valuable player.
Bad example: Does Lebron James' ability to score, pass, and rebound make him the league's most valuable player?
Bad Example: Lebron James' ability to score, pass, and rebound just might make him the league's most valuable player.
WHAT TO DO BEFORE WRITING A THESIS STATEMENT?
Know your audience and purpose? Future employers
What is your topic question? Why do you want to Teach? What is the purpose of education? What is your role as an educator?
You must form an opinion and state it clearly. Be sure you have approached your evidence
fairly. Consider both sides of a controversial issue.
ESSAYS ARE A A KIND OF NON-NARRATIVE WRITING
QUESTIONS TO ANSWER? Whom are you going to Teach? Specifically, how will you reach the wide diversity of children that you
will have in your classroom? How do you define your community of learners? How and What are going to Teach? What are your beliefs about how children learn? How will these beliefs impact your teaching? for example ....
classroom management instructional strategies curriculum design assessment
How do you balance the needs of individual learners with the needs of the entire class
What are your goals for your students? Where are you going to Teach? How will you bring a global awareness into your classroom? What will be your relationship with the community, parents, teaching
colleagues, administration?
IF A WRITER WANTS TO THINK OF MORE EXAMPLES OF SOMETHING USE TRANSITIONAL WORDS SUCH AS: For instance For example Most importantly In addition First, Next, Last
LET’S ADD FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE TO YOUR ESSAY
