Teaching Strategies for GarageBand Interview Project

Active Learning

In an Active Learning environment students are given the opportunity to talk and listen, read and write, and reflect

as they work on a project of which requires students to apply what they are learning in a small group.

In this GarageBand Interview project the students will have the chance to use what they have learned in GarageBand to

portray a historical interview of a prominent Nebraskan. The students are discovering, applying and processing

information that they have researched in order to write a script for the interview.

Cooperative Learning

Cooperative Learning occurs when the students are in small teams with each student having a different level of

ability. Each member of a team is responsible for helping teammates learn and for understanding the material

themselves, they therefore sink or swim together. This creates an atmosphere of achievement. In this GarageBand

project the students are working with a partner gaining a greater satisfaction with their learning experience, develop social

skills, and improve their self-esteem. When the students work with a partner, most will have a greater retention and in

turn provide a better final project. Individual and group accountability will be assessed through individual tests at the end

of the project and a group grade for the actual project itself.

Demonstration

The Demonstration Method of teaching will be used during the GarageBand Interview project. The teacher will

demonstrate how to manipulate Garageband through the PowerPoint presentation created with the screen shots. When

the general over view of GarageBand is set, the teacher will actually demonstrate how to record voices, add background

music, and sound effects. This will be shown step by step using the exact physical procedures. While demonstrating the

teacher will explain the reason for and the significance of each step in order and including all steps. Using this

demonstration step allows the students the opportunity to see and hear the details related to the skill being taught. This

will accompany a print out of the GarageBand PowerPoint Slides to use as reference. By demonstrating the students can

see where to finds appropriate tools and buttons that they will utilize during the creation of their interview project. Allowing

the students to follow along in GarageBand while demonstrating will aid them in recalling the information when they need

to use it.

APL Teaching Strategies

One of the APL strategies that fit nicely in the GarageBand Podcast project is the daily Bell Ringer activity that

utilizes note cards. On each note card has a different short question or activity that is to be accomplished with a partner.

As the students come into the classroom they grab a note card and begin to complete the activity immediately. Then the

teacher randomly chooses a numbered note card. The chosen number group reads the question aloud and gives an

answer for all to hear. If time permits another card number may be chosen. They always have the same partner

throughout the project, therefore every day they grab a different card so before the end assessment everyone has

completed all of the note card short tasks. These cards are purposed as a review so all of the material has already been

taught. Then on the test day we take about 1 minute for each card and pass them around the room reviewing them all.

Questions are answered as they occur. The assessment question are derived directly from the note cards. Therefore

cards, are also in PowerPoint form. I print them off two slides to a page and staple them together at the top like a

flipbook. Each group can go through them if they finish the project before others, or have any extra time.

Integrating Technology

Today most teachers realize that computer literacy is crucial to a student’s education. By integrating technology

into curriculum can enhance and extend the learning experience for students and teachers alike. Since this project is

directly reliant on technology, it is actually a technology project that integrates Nebraska’s Social Studies Standards. The

students are required to learn prominent Nebraskans, so by turning it into an interview project they are required to use

research skills, copyright issues, Nebraskan history, how to use the GarageBand software, and working cooperatively.

This project covers several of the ISTE NETS and Performance Indicators for Students (NET-S). Creativity and

Innovation, Communication and Collaboration, Research and Information Fluency, Digital Citizenship, and the Technology

Operations and Concepts are all covered in this GarageBand Interview Project.

Historical Interviews

A GarageBand Project Pre-Test

Describe what a reporter does when conducting an interview.

Where have you seen or heard an interview before, who was being interviewed, or who was doing

the interviewing?

What are the “5 W’s” when asking questions?

Have you ever used GarageBand? YES NO

If you answered yes what have you created using GarageBand?

Name at least 3 Famous People from Nebraska, and tell me why they are famous.

Can you tell me why each of these Nebraskans are famous?

Annie Oakley -

Bob Devaney -

Gerald Ford -

Harold Edgerton –

Name at least three sources you could search to find factual information about famous historical

Nebraskans.

Name 2 or 3 classmates that you would like to work with on this project, and could eagerly share the

responsibilities with. Please name a boy and a girl.

How do you feel about presenting in front of your classmates, to show off what you have created?

Examples might be…Nervous, Worried, Excited, Don’t Care, Can’t Wait.

WRITTEN INTERVIEW RUBRIC

Historical Interview Rubric4 Points 7 Points 10 Points

Tracks 1 track - vocal 2 tracks – vocal and music At Least 4 – 2 vocal, background music and sound effects

BackgroundMusic

Seems inappropriate for the interview

It is there, but doesn’t really seem to fit the mood of the interview

Fits the mood of the interview

Interview Questions

Simple questions that anyone could answer, and not enough of them

Most questions are are only from one category and could be answered by anyone

Wide range of questions including memory, explanation and judgment questions backup questions to get more information present

Answers Mostly yes or no or limited answers with the Interviewer doing most of the talking

Limited answers with inappropriate phrases, or not based on researched facts

Accurate, based on researched facts, explained thoroughly with a story or example

Volumes Vocal track isn’t recorded loud enough to hear above the music and sound effects

Hard to understand the vocal track, the music is louder than the vocals

All tracks are heard clearly with the vocal tracks standing out loud and clear

Entertaining –Clever - Unique

Hard to listen to, noisy with little information from the historicalcharacter, no “wow” I didn’t know that – sounds like I have heard this before

Nice Interview, easy to hear and listen to but the music may not fit or be too loud, not at a nice equal level some of the questions sound copied

Enjoyable to listen to, easy on the ears, and informational with many facts and stories to back them up - one of a kind

Timing The music doesn’t come in atappropriate times, two people are talking at once, no pauses between questions and or answers

Sound effects do not come in at the right time, the music ends to soon or starts to late answers don’t come right after the question

Introductions are made, both vocal and musical, there is appropriate pauses between questions and answers, sound effects come at the right time

Overall Effectiveness

Don’t want anyone other than the teacher to see it, and would prefer if she wouldn’t listen to it either

Really don’t want to show this to my friends and family, it didn’t turn out the way I hoped it would

Something you are proud of creating and you can’t wait to show your friends and family

WorkingTogether

One person did all of the research and typing and controlled everything in the project

Most of the project was completed by one person doing all of the computer work and the other person just reading what their partner wrote for the interview

Partners worked well together were open-minded and put forth equal effort on research, typing, recording, and using the computer

Preparing the Interview

• While you are researching for facts on your historical Nebraskan, one of the best ways to begin sorting through the information is to fill in answers for the five W’s.

The 5 W’s + 1

Take Notes!• Use the given note taking guide to help keep

the information straight and organized.

• Write in your own words quick notes that answer the five W’s.

• Sift through all the information and use what is most important and useful for your interview.

Sample Note Taking Worksheet

Memory Questions

• Memory questions should help relax your subject and get them in the mood to reminisce.

• These questions will help you gather information about your subject’s personal experiences.

Memory QuestionsUse the 5W’s

• Where did you grow up?

• What kind of life did you have?

• Who were the people that most influenced your life?

• When did you decide what you wanted to do with your life?

• Why did you____________?

Writing Additional Questions

• In order to learn as much as possible from the interview you should write several questions that will encourage your subject to expand and explain their feelings and ideas.

• Your questions should encourage your subject to dig deeper into the stories and explain why things happened and how they relate to other events.

Explanation Questions

• What caused this event……?

• Why did this happen…..?

• What happened next…..?

• Can you describe the scene…?

• Explain the reason for…?

• Don’t be afraid to ask for

details or explanations!

• Why was this important?

• How did the story begin or end?

• What else do you want to tell me about this?

• What important question did I forget to ask you?

INTERVIEW TIPS

• Introduce yourself and your subject

• Be sure to speak loud and clear
