A Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop is
scheduled for early October in Chadron. It will be held October 12-13 at the Dawes County Fairgrounds in Chadron. The deadline to register for the Chadron training is October 2nd by 5 pm.
Volunteers have the opportunity to become certified as an adult (21 years and older) or apprentice (14-20 years old) leader. Four project areas will be offered at the Workshop - rifle, shotgun, pistol, and coordi-nator The Coordinator certification being offered in Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports is for individuals who work with certified shooting sports leaders, 4-H club leaders for shooting sports projects, or 4-H volunteers managing shooting sports events/competitions.
Coordinators will explore and learn more about the different disci-plines in 4-H Shooting Sports, how to support the different types of coaches, structuring a budget, designing a fund-raising plan, building an overall plan focused on Positive Youth Development, practice handling conflict, discover how to manage and recruit volunteers, best practices for managing events and competitions, teaching more than just “shooting” with science and healthy lifestyles, and working within your county’s 4-H structure.
There is a minimum number of participants needed to offer these disciplines at the workshop. Workshop participants will learn under ex-pert instruction from members of the Nebraska State 4-H Shooting Sports Training Team. The overall goal of 4-H clubs is to develop enthusiastic young people who boldly take action to demonstrate life skills as capable, caring, confident, competent kids of character thus contributing to the improvement of them-selves, their family, their club, their community, and their world. One way clubs might choose to measure their success in meeting that goal is their ability to gain status as a Nebraska 4-H Club of Excellence. This October, 4-H will launch the 2019 National Youth Science Day (NYSD) chal-lenge, Game Changers, Designed by Google and West Virginia Exten-sion services, Game Changers teaches kids ages 8-14 how to use computer science (CS) to create games, solve problems, and engage with topics they're passionate about.
Game Changers uses physical activity and puzzles to teach kids important CS concepts and problem-solving skills, creating real-world connections be-tween computer science and civic engagement, healthy living, and agriculture. Although the chal-lenge includes one computer-based and two un-plugged activities to help kids learn CS, all can be completed without internet access.
New to NYSD? Game Changers is easier than ever to facilitate and teachers and fa-cilitators don't need any prior experience with computer science or coding to bring the activities to their students.Game Changers is facilitated with an accompanying kit that includes materials for one computer-based and two offline activities. The kit includes clear instruc-tions for facilitators and offers both low and no-tech op-tions for events with-out internet access.NYSD kids will go on sale in July. Visit the National 4-H NYSD website to order your own kit!
