Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program you will be able to:1. Attendees will receive a description of a short five step development process

of a "client education plan” which is intended to familiarize the client with

fuel cell technology, associated costs, economic realities and beginning-to-

end time frames, etc.

2. Define Biomimicry in general, how it applies specifically to the design of a

net zero solution using what I call a "left hand/right hand" approach and its

advantages over a more typical approach.

3. Determine whether you are successful or not in achieving a net zero solution

for both the short term [1 week] and the long term [20 years] and the

empirical relationship between building load and fuel cell size.

4. Develop an understanding of the basic design process.

Definition: To provide enough RNG to provide 100% of all heating, cooling and electrical needs of the load.

Goals:

Do not cause internal disturbance to existing educational space in the building.

Do not use roof areas.

Maximize use of existing heating and cooling equipment

Objectives

Minimize water consumption.

Do not use LEED or other energy reducing programs.

Do not use energy credits.

Demonstrate verification of NZE success or failure within one week.

Maintain maximum long term flexibility-never say never.

Achieve a 10 year capital recovery.

The goal of a third party plan is to answer the question, ‘what do you do if the grid

fails?’

What is Biomimicry and how does it apply

to NZE solutions?

I call it a “left hand/right hand” design

approach. Primary concept is that there is

no such thing as waste, but only resource.

EXCESS ENERGY CONSUMPTION

PLAN

This is a simple plan which determines who buys the excess energy which the fuel cell produces but which is not needed for short periods of time.

Occasional excess energy can be sold to near by server centers, parking garages, night time loads of surrounding buildings, security lighting, etc.

Maximum historical 24 hour/annual electrical load.

Maximum historical 24 hour/annual gas demand.

Cost of electricity from utility.

Cost of gas from utility.

Economic value of ‘pure’ and ‘dirty’ CO2.

Gas transportation cost.

Henry Hub and/or NYMEX gas futures costs.

Estimated capital cost of fuel cell system.

Estimated capital cost of gasification equipment.

Utility inflation rate.
