Aim 1: If we make rules about how gases behave, what truths must we hold evident?Objective: Learn the postulates of the Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT)

Kinetic Molecular Theory of Gases1. Particles are in constant, random, straight-line

motion2. As temperature increases, particle motion

increases3. Collisions between particles and with particles

and the container are perfectly elastic4. The volume of the particles themselves are

negligible5. There are no attractions between the particles

Do gases follow the rules?

An ideal gas follows all the rules of the Kinetic Molecular Theory. Just like an ideal student follows all the rules of school and learning. Do ideal students exist?

In reality, gases do not follow the rules.1. Gas particles ARE attracted to each other.2. Individual gas particles DO have volume.
