Volume 74 No. 2 www.houstonfederationgardenclubs.org. September 2020
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome to a year unlike no other for Houston Federation of Garden Clubs. We are a little over a week away from our Sep-tember 9, 2020 meeting and we are going to be meeting virtu-ally using a program called Zoom. Could we have imagined this back in the year 2000? I almost feel that I am living in the world of Dr. Seuss and looking for characters called Zoom1 And Zoom2. However, on a more serious note, we will be having a wonderful speaker, Kelsey Low, from the Houston Arboretum and Nature center who has had experience using Zoom for meetings so I hope you can join us. Invitations will go out via email to all the club presidents and individual members. We are asking the club presidents to forward the Zoom invitation on to all their club members.
Because we are not meeting in person for September, we will be postponing our in-person ceremony to honor our club presi-dents until our October meeting. We had also hoped to do our Awards Ceremony, already postponed once from last May, at our September meeting but that, too, will be in October. I have mentioned OCTOBER twice already but I also want to point out that we have high hopes of having an in-person meeting on October 9th when Alan Masters will be giving his talk titled “Under Construction”. An alternative for those who cannot join us in person for October may be a meeting that is both in person and virtual. AND don’t forget our Plant Sale and Food Drive on that Saturday, October 10th – it will be outdoors so we should be fine wearing facemasks and staying away from others. Ann Korenek, the organizer of this effort, is looking for workers and tells me that there will be some very unusual plants there.
You may be wondering how your club will get your copies of the Federation Directory. It is at the printer right now and the HFGC board, including our wonderful Zone Counselors, are working on regional distribution plans. Another source of infor-mation is the HFGC website. If you have never visited, you might want to take a look now. There has always been an-nouncements, an up-to-date calendar, and access to forms. If you visit (https://www.houstonfederationgardenclubs.org) now,
you will also find many new items like program details, our Conservation List, and our speaker list, items normally only found in the directory. If you need specific information be-fore you receive your directory, please contact me or a board member and we will see if that information can be included on the website. While you are at the website, take a look at some of the garden photographs. (Select the Pho-tos menu and then choose one of the drop-down pages.) If you have some photos from this summer of your flowers and vegetables, please send them to me and I will include them as well.
Remember to be on the lookout for the ZOOM invitation for our September 11th meeting. Hope to “see” you there!

From Texas Garden Clubs to All Club Presidents: we have voted to keep club ratings the same for
the upcoming year, due to covid closings. Also, judges will be lenient in grading award entries. Remember
that award applications are due to District IV Judges November 1, 2020.
FROM DISTRICT IV—MUST READ FOR ALL INCOMING PRESIDENTS
Vada de Jongh is your District IV Director for 2020-2021
District IV represents your club to TGC
Houston Federation of Garden Clubs belongs to District IV as a Council
“Area Coordinators” are District IV chairs
“Zone Counselors” are federation chairs
District IV’s website is http://www.districtivtexasgardenclubs.org/
Please keep your June 2019 District IV Newsletter (it will have a list of officers and chairs and their job titles). These last for 2 years so you will need this newsletter for reference. The info will also be on the District IV web-site. Please pass it on to the next President. Also, keep your Summer 2019 Lone Star Gardener. This has the offic-ers for TGC for the 2 year 2019-2021 term. District IV dues are now $8 per club. Dues are payable April 1st thru May 31st Marbridge Farms is no longer a donation site for TGC because they no longer have greenhouses. District IV’s main project is Brookwood so please make donations directly to this through District IV Treasurer, Madeleine Rogers. Honor someone in your club by giving them a Life-time membership to District IV, TGC. Inc. They will receive a rib-bon for their membership. Buying memberships honors club members and supports Brookwood since all money raised through Life Membership is donated to Brookwood. You may purchase this membership anytime during the year. Please encourage your local club Scholarship winners to apply for the District IV Scholarship. Do not forget the Arbor Day Celebration. District IV Arbor Day Ceremony will be held on November 2, 2020, at Fisher House IIl on the grounds of the DeBakey VA Hospital in Houston. Please send Ann Gay the names of your members who have passed this last year so that we may include them in the Memorial portion of the ceremony. District IV 2021 Spring Convention is March 24, 2021, at Bellaire United Methodist Church in Bellaire, TX. Awards are due by November 1—see the June District IV Newsletter as to where to send them. Include enough postage to mail them another time. The certificates will be handed out at the Spring Convention. Also attach the postcard as described in the Awards Manual found on the TGC website and use the NGC form as your first page. Your Area Coordinator will contact you in Nov/ Dec about the President’s report. Please fill it out and send it back. It will be passed on to the District IV Director in order that the report to TGC can be compiled.

BROOKWOOD IS DEFINITELY GROWING POINSETTIAS!!!!!
From Brookwood’s Facebook page: ATTENTION!!!! Calling all Fundraisers, Churches, Bands, Scouts, Etc!!!
Word has gotten back to us that people believe Brookwood is not growing Poinsettias this year! We need to
tell everyone that is not true
We have 52,000 to sell and we need everyone to tell your family, friends, coworkers, church members that
we have Poinsettias and we need everyone support in selling or buying these beautiful plants
The sale of these plants help support funding for our fantastic citizens
Please tell everyone you can and if you need more information call us about buying some plants
Thank you
Jonni Almoney is still volunteering at Brookwood. She worked with a group of ten to put rings on 3000 pots of poinsettias! In total there are 52,000 plants and they make up more than 40% of the nursery’s annual sales.

HFGC -The Poinsettia Project
Every year Houston Federation of Garden Clubs participates and contributes in the Poin-
settia Project with the help of financial contributions from clubs, affiliates and individual
members. Poinsettias are delivered to approved nursing homes and hospitals.
The Poinsettia Project is of wide spread benefit to our community while affecting a large
number of benefactors:
The poinsettias are grown by citizens of Brookwood, a facility which provides an educa-
tional environment that creates meaningful jobs for adults with disabilities.
With your donations, Federation purchases the poinsettias from Brookwood.
By purchasing the Poinsettias from the Brookwood Community, Federation benefits the
community in two very important ways. It supports the Brookwood community and
benefits shut-ins, patients in hospitals and nursing homes, etc.
After the Holiday Gala in December, the poinsettias are delivered by clubs and/or club
members to nursing homes and hospitals thereby bringing cheer to those communi-
ties.
First option- Poinsettias may be purchased by individuals for personal use. Alma Gordon
will be accepting checks for your orders at the October meeting. Cost per plant is $10.
Second Option- Starting at the October Federation meeting, clubs may sign-up with Alma
Gordon, Poinsettia Chair, to request poinsettias that clubs and/or members wish to deliver
to nursing homes and hospitals.
Clubs and Affiliates must provide names of facility, address, phone numbers and number of
poinsettias for which they would like to donate and deliver poinsettias. The Federation
board will review request and clubs/members will be notified of the approval.
Poinsettias will be distributed at the December Gala to clubs and/or members for delivery
to approved facilities as well to individual members who purchased poinsettias.
We encourage you to be generous with your club and individual donations to this amazing
project. Federation has ordered 100 poinsettias from Brookwood for 2020.
All financial donations to The Poinsettias Project may be directed to Alma Gordon, Poin-
settia Chair, 3810 Heatherbloom Dr, Houston TX 77045.
Thank you for your support and donations.

NEWS ABOUT AND FROM THE BROOKWOOD COMMUNITY
The Brookwood community continues to persevere in these very unusual times that persist. The summer has
been a time of just barely keeping up with all that needs to be done in the absence of volunteers and the assis-
tance of its citizens. Brookwood is very committed to the citizen’s safety and has kept them largely isolated
from the public. Not an ideal situation for those who truly love the work that they do. Some, however are still
able to work behind the scenes. They are the lucky ones.
Poinsettias are the main winter crop and source
of income for the horticulture department at
Brookwood. They are in desperate need of vol-
unteers to help transplant seedlings during the
months of August and September. If you are
able to give a day or two per week (or more)
please contact Karen Pollard at 281-375-2220 or
email KarenP@brookwoodcommunity.org They
have taken measures to keep you safe!!
There are more that 50,000 seedlings to be
planted! (UPDATE: 52,000 have been planted,
but help is still needed!!)
I know that some of the members from Federation have signed up and I and the Brookwood community thanks
them. You are all essential. You will not have to fill out the background check form for this job as you will have
no contact with the citizens.
Also, as with other years Garden clubs sign up for a workday along with fellow members throughout the
year. We will take sign-up dates from garden clubs as in
other years. IF however the Covid situation hasn’t been
cleared up or managed by your reserved date we will let you
know.
The dates are any Wednesday or Thursday of the week from
September through May.
You may email your preferred dates and I will start a calen-
dar. I will let you know asap if your preferred date is tak-
en. You may take up to 6 fellow members at a time and you
may sign up for as many days as your club wants. Several
clubs reserved several dates last year. In this way more members have a chance to participate.
Thank-you in advance for helping The Brookwood Community stay strong during this busy time.

League City Garden Club’s
First Place State and National Awards
The League City Garden Club would like to thank the Texas Garden Clubs and National
Garden Clubs for the great honors of being awarded First Place in both State and National
competitions for their video documentary, 70 Years and Still Growing, which details the
role the LCGC played in forming the look of League City as it is known today. The judging
was based on Presentation, Achievement and Promotion of NGC’s objectives as a garden
club. The League City Garden Club has been recognized by National Garden Clubs as a club
that “promotes the overall objectives of NGC and garden clubs around the country.”
In addition, the League City Garden Club was honored to receive a First Place award from
Texas Garden Clubs for its 2019-2020 Yearbook and an Honorable Mention for the 2019

Houston Rose Society—Virtual Program September 10
—Using the Right Product for the Problem
Fall is the season when roses start blooming after the summer heat. Houston Rose Society will promote
an annual product sale this September, with two senior Master Consulting Rosarians presenting in this
program.
Gaye Hammond will discuss three types of fertilizer (granular, water soluble, slow release) and the pros
and cons of organic and synthetic fertilizers. She will also discuss the products used in her garden.
Gaye is the former president of Houston Rose society, as well as a life member of American Rose Socie-
ty. As an avid writer, she published more than 300 articles and also has been a special section editor to
the American Rose magazine. She’s also a great speaker, giving speeches across the United States.
Robbie Tucker will discuss the use of fungicides and pesticides and answer any related questions. Rob-
bie and his wife, Marsha, have grown roses for more than 30 years and won dozen of queens of show,
including one at a national convention and four times with his own varieties. He has also hybridized
more than 30 varieties with 4 now in the mini hall of fame. As the owner of Rosemania for over 20 years,
he has many customers and deep knowledge on the products.
This meeting is going to be a virtual meeting held at GoToMeeting on Sept.10th from 7:00PM to 9:00PM
(CDT).

Not every member of the Heritage Gardeners Friendswood’s garden club is an adult. The club’s youth garden club, Heritage Jr. Master Garden-ers, is honored to have been named Texas Garden Clubs’ district first place, Texas Youth Garden Club. In addition, they were awarded first place for their “Ladybugs at Tea” flower show. These same young gardeners also won first place in the
Texas Master Gardener Association Search for Excel-lence for 2018.
In 1961, when organizing the Heritage Gardeners garden club, the gardeners also established Heritage Youth Gardeners with the belief that children are our future gardeners. That club has been active all these years. These garden club members were teaching the children garden-related activities but needed a more in-depth curriculum. In 2001, I became a Master Gardener and was introduced to the Jr. Master Gardener pro-gram. It is fashioned after the adult Master Gardener program. Heritage Youth Gardeners soon became Heritage Jr. Master Gardeners (Heritage JMG Kids).
Heritage JMG Kids is jointly sponsored by Heritage Gardeners, who provide a space to meet, a garden to maintain, activities in which to participate and an annual budget. Galveston County Master Gardeners provide the program and Master Gardener leadership. At present, MG Kaye Corey is Leader with MG Terri Winter and MG Jason Porterfield as assistants.
The program is unique and unlike other JMG programs in that participa-
Heritage Jr. Master Gardeners – Texas Youth Garden ClubKaye CoreyMG 2001
tion is open to all children in Friendswood as well as nearby towns and not grade specific. Most unique is the requirement that parents participate in all meetings and activities with their children. This level of family in-volvement recognizes another target audience by extending the education to the entire family. Parents say they are learning with their children.
We meet once a month, 2nd Thursday, 4:00 p.m., sharing refreshments provided by the honored birthday Kid of the month. We pledge the flags, and the Kids present their at-home assignments. They participate in a teacher-lead discussion, and group activity. The Kids enter their garden to maintain their personal container gardens, their butterfly garden and their pond. Fieldtrips are regular events for our entire families.
Their annual lemonade and craft booth at the Heritage Gardeners Spring Garden tour teaches teamwork and public relations. They sell their cre-ated craft projects, pressed flower greeting cards, herbal recipe brochures and shell plantings. Volunteerism is part of the program. They maintain a flowerbed in Stevenson Park and help in the park’s Pollinator Garden. You will see them tending the wagon patrol at the Master Gardeners Plants Sales.
Certification by Texas A&M AgriLife as Jr. Master Gardeners represents approximately three years of creative and fun studies in horticultural and environmental science education. Of the 60 children enrolled in our JMG program over the years, 38 have earned their certifications as Jr. Master Gardeners. Membership averages about 5 years with the older Kids helping the younger children.
To learn more about the JMG Program, please contact me, Terri or Jason. Let us help you start your own program. Visit JMGKids.com.
