Project Background yes
The Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science, University of
Peradeniya was established in 1962 with the
aim of providing a modern education of the
sciences to Sri Lankan youth. For almost 60
years, the faculty has been doing just that:
promoting the sciences and creating alumni
who have been leaders in the fields of
academia, business and research. Today over
1500 students undergo their education at this
esteemed establishment.
The Nanasara Scholarship Programme
The “Nanasara” scholarship was initiated by the Science Students Union (SSU) in the year
1993. It was originally a scholarship given by the senior batch to several students of the
junior batch. In the year 2012, the SSU decided to raise funds for a fixed deposit, and award
scholarships from the interest of the fund, thereby assuring the scholarship is awarded
without interruption. The SSU has inaugurated the “Nanasara” scholarship fund, with an
account at the Kandy City branch of the Bank of Ceylon.
Today, with a fund of more than Rs.300,000, we grant scholarships to five needy students
per batch with a monthly allowance of Rs.1500, for a period of ten months per year.

Geethanjalee
Geethanjalee was first held in 2009 as a show by the students of the Faculty Art Circle. The
stunning success of this programme encouraged the students to organize a larger event in
aid of the Nanasara Scholarship programme. That same year the first major Geethanjalee
show was held at the University Gymnasium.
After a lapse of one year, the second edition
was held at the same venue in 2011.
Featuring Kasun Kalhara and Amarasiri
Peiris, it drew massive crowds and was an
astounding success. Geethanjalee 2011 saw the
highest crowd participation at a concert at the
University of Peradeniya.
Our Objective
Our final aim is to award 10 scholarships per each batch, granting Rs. 2000 per month for
ten months per academic year. In order to reach this target, an amount of Rs. 5 million is
required. We expect to raise this amount within a period of five years. Several long term and
short term fund raising projects have been proposed in order to achieve this aim.
Geethanjalee is the main fund-raising initiative.

Project Outline yes
Geethanjalee 2013 will be a first-of-its kind unplugged concert at the University of
Peradeniya. Featuring three of the most prominent artists in the local music scene; Aathama
Liyanage, Nirosha Virajini and Amarsisri Peiris, it will follow on the footsteps of the previous
Geethanjali concerts, but will leave a lasting legacy of its own as the premier entertainment
event held at the university.
The stage atmosphere will be calm and serene while the artists perform intermittently, and
the backstage will be reflective of the overall theme. This is bound to be a unique
experience for the audience.

Plan of Action yes
Publicity
Geethanjalee will be publicized in several mediums. The organizers wish to gain mass media
partners who will publicize the event in visual and auditory mediums. A print media partner
will also be present. There would be pre-event as well as post-event coverage, ensuring the
highest visibility of the event and its partners. In addition social and media platforms will
also be utilized. The organizers will also employ Below-the-line forms of advertising. The
forms of publicity that is expected to utilized are as below
New and Social Media: A Facebook event page as well as a website
(www.geethanjalee.com) has been created. This will be utilized to promote the
event by the use of a teaser campaign to hike interest.
Poster Campaign: This will be conducted in two steps. First as a teaser campaign to
create interest within the university and the city of Kandy, then as a full scale
campaign. Posters will be posted within uni and in the city of Kandy, with two large
posters at Galaha Junction and at the University. We also hope to have several
cutouts within the university as well the kandy City limits.
Print Media: This will include advertisements as well as interviews and pictorials.
TV and Radio channels will be approached to air advertisements on the concert. We
plan to do this for a period of two months, during which time there would also be
several talk shows, interviews on the vent as well.
A T-Shirt has been printed specially for the vent, and this too will help create
interest.
A unique promotion campaign involving dramas will be undertaken within University
The Social Media pages and websites of the performing artistes will be utilized to
promote the vent.

Ticketing
There would be several ticketing outlets in the Kandy City limits
The committee would conduct a ticketing campaign within the university
Online ticket selling via websites such as TicketsLK.com
Ticketing promotion tours in the city of Kandy will also take place.
Tickets will be priced as follows
Rs.1500: first two rows. Total of hundred seats. Inclusive of dinner and special
Geethanjalee 2013 Memento. These tickets would be targeting past alumni of the
faculty of Science and other well-wishers.
Rs.1000: Rows 3 to 5. Total of two hundred seats, mostly aimed at staff members.
Rs.500: Total of 400 seats. Targeting the general public.
Rs. 200: Total of 1500 seats. This is mainly aimed at the students of the faculty of
Science.
Rs.40: Balcony area. A capacity of 4000. Aimed at the general student population.
Sounds and Lights
Sounds will be of the highest quality, suitable for a concert of this sort
Lighting will be soft and create a pleasant ambience.

would be university students, while also members of academia and the general public can

Choosing of Scholars yes
Under this program 10 scholarships will be awarded for each batch, granting Rs 1500 per
each month and ten months per academic year. Until the fund reaches to the sufficient
amount of money for this, number of scholarships and the amount of money for a
scholarship can be decided according to the fund at that time.
Scholarship will be awarded only for students who are in 1st 2nd and 3rd years of particular
academic year.
Students are eligible to apply for “Nanasara” scholarship if,
1. they do not receive the Mahapola or Bursary scholarship
2. the annual income is less than 200,000
3. their siblings are still studying and
4. they have satisfactory academic performances
for 1st year students :- O/L s and A/L s
for 2nd year students :- 1st year
for 3rd year students :- 1st year and 2nd year
