While progress is being made to address gender parity, there is still a way to go…

‘In 2017, the average progress on closing the global gender gap stands at 68%, meaning that an average gap of 32% remains to be closed worldwide’ (Global Gender Gap Report, 2017)

What stops women from taking up leadership roles?Lack of confidencePrevious negative experiences of ‘leadership’I don’t have the capability to ‘lead’‘I’m not a leader….nor do I want to be..’ Playing safe, not wanting to play ‘big’ Risk of becoming a ‘surrogate’ man Fear of failure, fear of success..Other priorities (family, children..) Cultural barriers Politics Fear of ‘losing’ ourselves Feeling powerless to change the ‘status quo’Perceived lack of opportunities Social conditioningHistorical conditioningOthers…!!!!!

Women in Leadership..

• Women tend to be more transformational than men (Bass, 1999)

• Communication, coaching, developing others and time management more highly correlated to female managers than male managers (Burke & Collins, 2001)

• Women are less likely to adhere to the traditional command and control leadership style (Rosener, 1990 cited Silvestri, 2007).

• Women tend to adopt a more democratic or participative style than men (Fitzsimmons & Callaan, 2016)

• Feminine practice promotes values of mutuality, interdependence, inclusion, cooperation, nurturance, support, participation, self-determination and empowerment (Ferguson, 1984; Martin, 1993 cited in Silvestri, 2007)
