ROMANIAN TOURS
Pre-and Post conference Dracula Tour [2 days – 1 overnight stay
in Brasov] (Price to be established according to numbers going)
DAY 1
Drive to Sighisoara the best-preserved 15th Century walled town in Europe - the only medieval citadel inhabited today, designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Fortified walls
encircle Sighişoara’s lustrous merchant houses, now harbouring cafes, hotels and craft shops.
Lurking behind the gingerbread roofs and turrets of the Unesco-protected old town is the house where Vlad Ţepeş, (Dracula), Transylvania’s
most notorious ruler was born.
After the visit to Sighisoara drive to Brasov
to spend the night. Brașov is a city in the Transylvania region of Romania, ringed by
the Carpathian Mountains. It's known for its medieval Saxon walls and bastions including the towering Black Church, the largest
Gothic Church in Europe.
DAY 2
Arguably the crowning architectural feature of
Transylvania, Bran’s Castle boasts rusted-red
turrets and imposing stonewalls. As you
explore, hear of how Vlad the Impaler was
incarcerated in the dungeons and learn of the
castle’s associations with Bram Stoker’s
legendary monster, Dracula. Drive back to
Cluj after the visit arriving late.
ACCOMPANYING PERSONS’ TOURS
1. Turda Salt mine – 40 mins drive from Cluj [3 HRS] (15€ per person)
The salt mine which is around 400-feet deep,
dates as far back as the 17th century, and was used for everything from a cheese storage
center to a bomb shelter in WWII after excavations stopped in 1932. Today, it has been transformed into an incredible underground theme
park.
2. Rameti Monastery and Aiud – 1.5 hrs from Cluj [6 hrs duration 1pm-7pm]
(30€ per person)
The monastery in Manastirii valley is one of the
ancient Orthodox citadels in Transylvania. One of its
wall paintings has the year 1377 inscribed on it. In
1988, the church was raised 2.08
meters higher. Restaurateurs found 9
layers of wall paintings, the oldest
dating back to the XIV century. Life in
the monastery was not without strife.
The monks had participated in the
Horia, Closca and Crisan uprising,
consequently the Viennese court
closed down the monastery for 7
years and forbade the restoration of
the church. Monastic life started to revive in 1940 till 1959, when the
Communists expelled the nuns. They gathered in Aiud and founded the
carpet department. In 1969 they went back to the monastery as
civilians and started making carpets. The monastery was granted
permission to operate in 1972. Since then new departments have
opened, such as the embroidery, knitting, bakery, school, library, doctor's office as well
as a museum housing antiquities, paintings, pictures of saints and an ethnographic
collection.
On the way we shall also visit Aiud Citadel
(Cetatea Aiudului in Romanian) which is
located in the center of Aiud, and was built
during medieval times, comprising many
towers dedicated to different trades that
existed then. It is the main tourist attraction
of Aiud. The citadel is fairly small, with a
perimeter of 350 metres, and it is in the form
of an irregular pentagon. The earliest
documented evidence of the citadel extant
today dates from 7 November 1293, a
privilege issued by King Ladislaus IV - King of
Hungary (1272–1290), but local tradition
holds that the first stone watch tower was
finished during the Mongol invasion of Europe in 1241
