Today we are going to explore science in the city!!!

Describe what you see.

Could the two pigeons on the left produce offspring that have the traits of the pigeon on the right?

How can we find out

We must understood heredity

• Heredity is the process of passing genes from generation to generation.

• Genes are segments of DNA that control the traits that we possess

• Genes come in different forms which are known as alleles (ex: height, skin color, hair texture).

Are there different types of alleles?

Yes there are, dominant alleles and recessive alleles.

• Dominant alleles are the alleles whose trait is always expressed (These alleles are represented with capital letters).

• Recessive alleles are the alleles whose trait is hidden in the presence of a dominant allele (These alleles are represented with lower case letters).

The people in our world have different combination of alleles.

Genotype: The combination of alleles that an individual has

Genotypes come in three forms which include homozygous dominant, homozygous recessive and heterozygous

• Homozygous (pure): Both alleles for a trait are the same for an individual

• Heterozygous (hybrid): The alleles for a trait are different for an individual

What about the way we look?

• Phenotype: The expression of the genotype (i.e. the way a person looks or the characteristics they possess)
