QuestionTo what effect have the Christchurch earthquakes had

on the Redcliff’s community local facilities, with particular reference to the local library and

kindergarten and how can this be qualified and quantified?

AnswerRedcliffs has suffered severe physical damage, directly

impacting on all aspects of the community.Displacement, community uncertainty, destruction of

buildings and land and severe disruption to businesses, services and residents has resulted.

The aim of our research was to:•Establish a current population base

(demographics)•Gain a sense of community well-being

•Define business confidence•Provide data sets to assist the recovery trajectory

Impacts of the Canterbury Earthquakes

• Devastating loss of life, business, land and community

wellbeing following the Canterbury Earthquakes.

Loss• Significant loss of life, wellbeing and residential

properties.

Uncertainty

• Many residents still waiting to hear about property status from

EQC.

Land Zoning

• Land zoning process

Green zone = Repairs can proceed.

Red zone = Uninhabitable

Orange zone = Yet to be determined

White zone = Yet to be determined

Redcliffs Redzone• Houses along the edge of the hill and around Redcliffs Red-

zoned.

Housing and Services Damaged

• Severe damage to footpaths, roads, residential houses.

Closure and Relocation

• Redcliffs Primary School Closure and temporarily located to Van Asch

School, Sumner.

Library and Kidsfirst Kindergarten Relocation

• Closure of the Library & Kidsfirst Kindergarten in Redcliffs, but

temporary locations are proving fruitful.

• Many Businesses have been disrupted following the Earthquakes

- New World

To produce data, information and mapping to help assist the Redcliffs

community readjust and recover.

• Estimated loss - 631 residents since the 2006 Census

•The Community shows a predominance of full-time residents but also a large portion

of retirees

• Opened in 1906,The Redcliffs Community Library has 222 users

• The New World is a strong community asset

• 4% of residents now recognize their health as poor

•7% of the surveyed population do not feel safe

•General view of the library as an important community asset

•Specifically important for the elderly and previously for primary school aged children

•A rebuild has great support

•A common suggestion was the rebuild of a joint use Public Volunteer and City Council Library

• Negative population shift (est. 631 loss since Feb 2011)

• 47% of the Redcliffs population are 30-64 years old

• 93% of residents feel safe in Redcliffs

• 96% believe Redcliffs will recover

• 98% want the New World to return

• 100% of Redcliffs businesses are positive for the futureInformation about a community can work for the

community. Our results provide qualitative and quantitative data-sets beneficial to stakeholders,

community partners and government agencies, aimed at increasing recovery and resilience.
