FROM THE INTERVIEW:my mother

where did they come from?

• my mother’s side of the family immigrated originally from England. My great grandmother was born in England.

why did they come here?

• My great grandmother came to the United States, because as my mom said, “she wanted more religious freedom.”

where did they first come to?

• My great grandmother first came to New York, which is extremely urban and didn't like it. So she then migrated to the more rural Rhode Island, where she met my great grandfather.

where have they moved since?

• As far as my mother knew, Rhode Island was the only place that my great grandmother lived until she passed away. My grandmother then moved her family, including my mother at age 7, to California.

how did they originally get here?

• My great grandmother originally came here on the mayflower, first wave of immigration (great grandmother) and the second wave of immigration (great grandfather)

what kind of work were they involved in?

• My great grandmother did not work at all. Her husband, my great grandfather was a professional, and apparently well known, sports player (my mom does not remember the name of the sport at that time, but she thinks it was similar to croquet.) They were extremely wealthy.

what kind of food did they eat?

• As i mentioned in the last slide, both my great grandparents were extremely wealthy, so my mom remembers them eating all kinds of fancy/expensive dishes.

does religion fit into the story?

• As i mentioned earlier, religion plays a huge part in the story, according to what my mom has told me. My great grandmother was extremely Catholic, so her lifestyle was very much so affected by this.

do politics fit into the story?

• Being a strong Catholic, my great grandmother’s political standpoint was Republican, which heavily swayed much of her opinions.

was there anything they changed when

they came here?• Surprisingly, my mom said that according

to my grandmother, my great grandmother was the same her entire life - always needed the best and most expensive of everything. There was never any kind of transformation in personality or traditions.

are there any traditions from where they came from that

they still hold?

• Religious traditions were still held, and also passed down to the next generations. However when my mom met my dad, my mom became a Christian.

were they affected by U.S. war?

• It is unknown whether or not they were affected by U.S. war, but i do know that my grandfather fought in multiple battles, including WWII
