The Mormon Rocks were formed due to the tilted San Andreas fault line where the North American plate and the Pacific plate come together.

The Mormon Rocks are made of sand stone. The different layers in the rocks show how much rain fall we got during that time period. The more rain there was that year the bigger the pieces of rocks were in that layer.

The San Andreas Rift Zone is located near the Cajon pass off the 15 fwy. This was created by an ancient stream bed that was formed by an earthquake in 1857.

Cinder Hill is a volcanic cone or also known as a cinder cone. Even though this volcano is still active it has not erupted in thousands of years.

Lava Flow is molten rock that has erupted to Earths surface.

Fossil Falls was formed by the water melted from the glaciers creating lakes (including Owens Lake) and the volcanic activity in the mountain ranges.

The Metate holes were formed by the water continuously hitting and circulating against the rocks. These holes were used to help the Natives make there food.

The Native Americans are the ones who left the flakes there. They were used to make arrows and weapons.

Native Americans left these petroglyphs. This petroglyph was of a medicine man and a pack of horned sheep. These drawings show us the views the Native Americans had many many years ago.

House rings were used by the Native Americans to help set up there camp. This was also a good way for them to remember where they were when they came back from there travels.

Mt. Whitney is the tallest mountain in the United States with an elevation of 14,505 ft.

Diaz Lake was created by the Lone Pine Earthquake in 1872. The Owens Valley dropped and was filled with water.

The Lone Pine Fault runs along two parallel mountain ranges which are the Sierra Nevada’s and the Inyo-White Mountains. The 1872 Lone Pine earthquake created Owen Valley.

Manzanar was a camp for the Japanese Americans that were incarcerated during WW2. This was 1 of 10 camps they had and there were 110,000 Japanese Americans in Manzanar from 1942-1945. Long before the Japanese arrived, Manzanar was home to the Native Americans that lived in little villages. Manzanar is located in the Owens Valley between Lone Pine and Indepenence.

The dead forest was created by the bark beetles that ate the trees and dried them out. The dead trees were cut down in order to prevent a forest fire.

Paoha Island was created by volcanic eruptions on the lakebed which eventually rose 6,670 ft. The other small island in Mono Lake is called Negit Island.

Mono Lakes shorelines have changed over the years because of the water being diverted from the Los Angeles aqueduct.

Tufa was created by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from ambient temperature bodies of water. Tufa is a variety of limestone also called calcium carbonate limestone. These tufas were formed under water and then as the sea level dropped they were exposed. The tufa provides nesting for birds.

Panum crater is a volcanic cone that is part of the Mana-Inyo craters. Magma started rising to the top from deep within the Earths crust. When this extremely hot liquid rock contacted the water it expanded and a violent eruption occurred.

Convict Lake was created by glaciers that scoured the Sierra Nevada’s. A retreating glacier from 10,000 years ago left behind the moraine that damned Convict Creek which created Convict Lake.

Keoughs hot springs are very warm because it is the emergence of heated underground water from the Earths crust.

One thing that really interested me was the beads and pendants shaped from stone. These beads had many different beautiful colors and were very unique. These beads were dated back 4,000 years ago & are still around today.
