Urban Change: Padova
Identify with the issue of urban change in relation to distance from Central Business District (CBD). Students must demonstrate their ability to understand and explain the terms associated with urban geography like Greenfield site, brownfield site, twilight zone, urban decline, urban regeneration, services, function, accessibility, pedestrian zones and precincts etc. To introduce the area of study i.e. Barcelona, Spain.
Hypothesis
Ideas to develop the hypotheses (by discussion session):
As distance from CBD increases land use changes from High to low order services. As distance from CBD increases the amount of pedestrians decrease. As distance from CBD increases amount of pollution increases. As distance from CBD decreases the amount of vehicles increase. As distance from CBD decreases the amount of residential land use decreases. As distance from CBD the sphere of influence for services decreases.
Method
Four approximately sized sample zones have been preselected (100 meters in length in 3 different zones with varying distance from the main pedestrianised area).
In each study site:
1. Walk the area2. Complete:
a) study of RICEPOTS.b) Environmental Quality Indexc) Perception Surveyd) Index of Services and Amenitiese) Index of Residential Qualityf) Pedestrian Count.g) Traffic Count.
Students also take photographs and field sketches.
Be attentive when working next to roads and cycle lanes.
Index of Residential Quality
At each of the sites carry out the following survey. Use a 100 metre street section, both sides of the road. As this is a subjective surevey is should always be completed by the same person.
