Geometric Shape & Repetition

Faces

Geometric Shapes: Geometric Shapes can be plotted mathematically.

These include two dimensional shapes such as circles an squares, but also their 3-D equivalents such as spheres and cubes.

Typically objects which are geometric shapes are manmade.

On occasion, geometric shapes can be found in nature.

Repetition.Any time that an object appears more than once in a photograph.

Pure Repetition:

When whatever is being repeated is an exact replica of itself.

Variety:

When similar objects are repeated.

Because most things are manufactured in a geometric

shape, shape and repetition will often be found together.

Faces.

Ezra Pound, Poet, at the Home of William Carlos Williams, Rutherford, New Jersey

By Richard Avedon

Approach #1Get close up and isolate the face.

Show the structure and form of the face itself.

These pictures are a study in organic shape.

Approach #2 Capture Emotion

You must lead the subject and project the mood that you want to capture.

Approach #3 Reflect the subjects personality.

Use appropriate setting, dress and objects.

Stand back further so that the setting becomes more important.

Tips for the face assignment:

#1 Spend 30 min with your subject before you take any pictures.

#2 Explain what you want from your subject.

#3 Lead your subject emotionally Ask questions in order to take their minds off the pictures.

#4 Use your zoom, and stand back.

#5 Take more pictures than you need to. If you take 100 pictures, one of them will be always better than the rest. If you take 1000 pictures, one of them will be better than the rest.

I took 47 pictures of Lucy in order to get the three pictures that I wanted.

Expectations:

• 15 pictures of Geometric shape and repetition. At least 5 of each.

• 15 pictures of Faces. You must use at least 3 subjects.

• One of your subjects must be 10 years older or younger than you.
