INTRODUCTION
This report presents the results of our subsurface exploration services performed for the proposed
grade raise project located on ND 34 – Southwest of Gackle in Logan County, North Dakota.
The geotechnical Scope of Services for this project included the advancement of 35 test borings
to a depth of 5 feet below existing site grades. Soil samples were taken at one-foot intervals along
with bulk samples for laboratory testing. The laboratory testing included moisture content, particle
size analysis, Atterberg limits, and moisture-density relationships. AASHTO standards were
followed for laboratory procedures.
Maps showing the site and boring locations are shown in the Site Location and Exploration
Plan sections, respectively. The results of the laboratory testing performed on soil samples
obtained from the site during the field exploration are included in the Exploration Results section.
SITE CONDITIONS
The following description of site conditions is derived from our site visit in association with the
field exploration and our review of publicly available geologic and topographic maps.

GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERIZATION
Variable soil conditions were encountered within our test borings. Topsoil depths ranged from
approximately one to six inches. Underlying the topsoil, lean clays with variable amounts of sand
and gravel were primarily encountered in the northern half of the site. The southern portion of the
site consisted predominantly of sand and gravel. The site contains cobbles and boulders.

The boreholes were observed while drilling and after completion for the presence and level of
groundwater. Groundwater was observed at a depth of 5 and 4 feet in borings B-6 and B-7,
respectively.
The AASHTO classifications of the soils from the borrow area ranged from A-1 to A-7-6. The average
moisture contents of the samples at the time of drilling range from 6.5% below to 15.4% above their
respective optimum water content. The group indices of the samples ranged from 0 to 30 with an
average of 3. The soils on the southern half of the borrow area are indicated to be the better
subgrade soils; however, under average conditions of good drainage and thorough mixing and
compaction, the soils from the northern half should perform adequately as a subgrade embankment
material.
