Classwork• Group readings from Bulfinch’s
Medieval Mythology– Chapter III, “Arthur” (page 20) to
“Arthur Chosen as King” (page 25)• Develop a series of 5-7 “study
guide questions” for this reading– Questions should be thought-
provoking– Students should also know the
answer to these questions.
Example Question:• From where, according to Bulfinch, might the
symbol of the “Round Table” have originated from?– Answer:– Arthur, might literally mean “The Great Bear”; a
constellation of the same name near the pole is spherical in shape and may therefore represent the round table.
Homework (for Friday)
• Read Bulfinch’s Medieval Mythology page 25-39, the first chapter on Arthur– This includes “Merlin,” Guenever,” “King Arthur Slays the Giant of
St. Michael’s Mount,” and “King Arthur Gets a Sword from the Lady of the Lake”• For each of these sections, take notes that summarize key
details and write down any questions you may have• Consider the following: What do these characters or events
show us about the character of Arthur? How might these sections/stories fit into the Hero’s Journey?• Notes/Questions will be collected on Friday for a grade!
