Internships

Strategies• Apply for internship programs–Cast a wide net

• Create your own internship–Develop prospect list, target list–Start building your network, rolodex–Revise your resume–Send out tailored emails, cover letters

Your Pitch• Establish common ground – i.e. “Bill at CS referred me.”

• Get to the ask early• Communicate your value proposition• Suggest course of action – i.e. “I will be in Portland for the next

four Fridays. Are you available for a coffee break?”

Timing• Internship recruiting is happening now. • Majority of positions recruited for

between now and March, though one-offs happen throughout the year.

• Also consider doing a project-based internship during the regular school year.

Interviewing

Talking About Yourself• Employers are interested in hearing

about what you accomplished—your success stories.• S-O-A-R –Situation–Obstacle/Objective–Action –Result

ExerciseIn pairs:

Take turns in each role: Recruiter – pose question Interviewee – respond using SOAR

Questions• Tell me about a work or school-related problem

you solved—what steps did you take and what was the outcome?

• How would you go about explaining Net Present Value to your grandmother?

• If you had to use just one financial statement to evaluate a company which would you use? Why?

• Share with me a time when you failed at something—what did you learn?
