STEWARDSHIP
Today’s gospel contains an irony that challenges us. While a steward in the parable is given the responsibility of
maintaining and expanding the wealth of the owner, this cunning steward has expanded and assured his own future
by benefitting others and himself. If we look hard, we can see that during these past two years, we have been spending
our efforts to be as prudent as “children of the world.” We have used tremendous energy and unthinkable generosity
to benefit others as well as ourselves. We have used every resource we have to guard and protect the heritage of our
Master and our own. We have been good and successful stewards.
This week we celebrate our efforts in preserving and restoring the work of generations by imitating the industry and
inventiveness of the worldly steward. In writing about today’s gospel, Saint Ambrose said that possessions are not
sinful, but a great responsibility. For over 100 years, wonderful people have made the presence of God known and
realized here. Presence implies place. We accepted responsibility. Just as the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed,
we had suffered the loss of our temple.
Today we acknowledge that every work of ours in reclaiming our church was done through the grace of God. We
are grateful. To express that gratitude, we dedicate a year of rejoicing for an accomplishment that could only have
been done through His will. We have been permitted to be Stewards of the Master.
Happy 100th anniversary to all our dear parishioners and St. Anthony’s friends.
Fr. Hernán Cely Pastor
